It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of our colleague Joaquín (Ximo) Clemente Riera on Tuesday, 18 August 2026. Ximo was a principal double bass teacher and department representative at Codarts Classical Music. With him, we lose a versatile musician, a passionate teacher, and a highly valued colleague. Ximo stood out for his broad musical interests and his versatility as a double bassist. Every year, Codarts organises an introduction week called Kick-Off Week for bachelor students. During this week you discover what Codarts and the city of Rotterdam have to offer you, but more importantly: you get to know each other. The Kick-Off Week takes place in the last week of August. On Wednesday 20 May, Katendrecht once again came alive for Pop op de Kaap. Across various venues around Deliplein, more than thirty artists and bands presented their original music to a wide audience. One of the festival’s greatest strengths was its remarkable musical diversity. Visitors were treated to everything from intimate singer-songwriter performances and energetic rock bands to soulful R&B, jazz influences, electronic productions, alternative pop, funk, hip-hop and experimental crossovers that defy genre boundaries. This spring, the students of our Codarts Lyceum Classical Department completed their final music exams. Twelve wonderful concerts were assessed positively by various juries. The exams included two violin recitals, one cello, one clarinet, one harp, two piano, two bassoon, one trumpet, one euphonium, and one trombone recital. For these students in HAVO 5 and VWO 6, the music exams took place alongside their school exams, making their achievement all the more impressive.
