This unique event for up-and-coming jazz talent is experiencing its 26th edition this year! During the final, the talents go to extremes to get the best out of themselves. They challenge themselves, explore and exceed the boundaries of music. Expect a very varied, unique jazz program with the best young musicians of the moment. The Erasmus Jazz Prize was introduced by Codarts and the Friends of Codarts Foundation to give young jazz talent a push in the direction of the professional circuit. The now prestigious prize turned out to be a great stepping stone for a number of successful young jazz musicians. In 2023 won Kim Kamilla Jäger the Erasmus Jazz Prize. Having a clear vision, where you want to go, how to get there, and a strong motivation for choosing this program are also part of the assessment. A part of the audition involves performing two of your own songs, preferably recent compositions. You may perform these solo or with a band. During your audition, it is important to showcase your creativity. Thirty minutes before your entrance exam, you will receive a songwriting assignment consisting of a chord progression and a lyrical theme. You will have 30 minutes to create a melody for a verse, a pre-chorus, and a chorus, and write suitable lyrics. The result of the theory test will also count toward your audition score. Requirements: Knowledge of music theory. A good musical ear. An open attitude toward all styles and genres of music and other art forms. Basic proficiency in rhythm and chords on a harmonic instrument (piano and/or guitar). Strong command of English. A clear vision of music and your own place within the field. Basic knowledge of working with a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, ProTools) and owning a laptop.

Having a vision on who you are, where you want to go, how you will get there and a good motivation for choosing this study programme is something that’s taken into account. A part of the audition consists of presenting three of your own productions, preferably recently produced & written ones. During your audition it’s very important to demonstrate your creativity. An hour before your exam you’ll be given a production assignment in the form of audio en midi files. You’ll have an hour to mix given files and to add your own magic to it. In addition, (band) experience, musical interest, technique, musical ear, theoretical knowledge and reading notes are important. Moreover, you need to have a good motivation behind your choice of this study. At the admission audition you play 2 to 3 songs, preferably with as “broad” an orientation as possible (in various styles). Playing with your own band is preferred. Technique: Ability to play major and minor scales in all keys. Reasonable left and right-hand technique is a requirement. Musical ear: Hear the difference between major and minor chords. Be able to repeat bass line by singing and play it on your bass. Search for key and play along with a track by ear. Reading notes: Sight reading and playing chords over a number of bars. We’re looking for musical flexibility in its purest form, which means that one is not obliged to be a full grown jazz performer. However candidates should be able to expose the possibilities to develop into a professional singer, making use of the different tools the jazz department will provide in the future. Candidates will present three songs in different styles. Jazz repertoire in its broadest form is a plus but not mandatory. Though it will give us a clearer view. There should be at least one improvisation in the performance.
