On Wednesday 20 May, Deliplein will be the setting for Pop op de Kaap. More than 30 bands and songwriters from Codarts Pop will fill the various stages across Katendrecht, performing their own original material. Neo Soul, Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter, R&B Funk, Electro, Dutch-language Alternative Pop, Blues, Dance, Folk Rock, Country, Punk, Progressive Alternative Metal, Pop Reggae, and more. The Brand New Jazz Festival provides a creative platform for up-and-coming talent. Following months of intensive rehearsals, these Jazz students are ready to showcase their original music; here, they don't just learn jazz from books, but discover it through hands-on experimentation. Visitors can expect an evening full of surprises where everything starts with jazz but evolves into something entirely new: from electronic sounds and cinematic compositions to the innovative blending of diverse styles. This festival is open to everyone who loves music or simply wishes to be inspired by the artists of the future, who may well soon be gracing the main stages of the North Sea Jazz Festival. On Friday 27 March, the first edition of the Codarts Orchestra Festival took place at De Doelen. It was an evening in which the versatility of Codarts students could be heard in full, with a programme spanning classical, jazz, pop and global musics. Audiences were free to move throughout the building, discovering different ensembles and styles across multiple halls and stages. This format made it possible to gain a broad impression of musical practice at Codarts in a short space of time, where collaboration and cross-genre work play a key role. Within the classical domain, highlights included performances by the Codarts Wind Band, which, together with the Royal Netherlands Marine Band, premiered REHAB by composition student Matthias Bodensteiner. The Codarts String Orchestra, led by Gordan Nikolić, also delivered an energetic and dynamic performance. Alongside these orchestral programmes, there was strong representation from Pop and Global Musics. Later in the evening, the Global Musics Silk Road Ensemble performed repertoire rooted in the historical Silk Road, bringing together a range of musical traditions within a single programme. The festival concluded in the Main Hall with the Codarts Pop Orchestra under the direction of Ronald Kool, presenting a set of original works and student arrangements, performed with the energy befitting a festival finale. The evening thus not only showcased the diversity of the programmes on offer, but also highlighted how students develop and present themselves across a wide range of musical contexts.

The performances bring together the work of two semesters in the Artistic Performance Lab. In this intensive programme, students work closely with Codarts’ experienced jazz coaches to develop their artistic direction and professional skills. We are delighted to welcome two outstanding Argentine artists. Ariel Pirotti, pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, will lead the tango orchestra OTRA. He will present his own arrangements and compositions, and give a masterclass on tango interpretation and performance. Pirotti is director of the UNA Tango Orchestra, a Premio Gardel winner, Latin Grammy nominee, and recipient of major composition awards, internationally recognised as both a creator and educator. Joining him is Lautaro Mazza, one of the most acclaimed tango singers of his generation. He has performed with the Orquesta del Tango de Buenos Aires and on major international stages including Teatro Colón and the World Tango Summit. A unique opportunity to experience contemporary tango through live performance and artistic exchange.
Codarts students spent a week learning, playing and immersing themselves in this project, exploring musical styles from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. This performance is the result. Music in Motion Music travels with people and is shaped by both origin and destination. Through music, stories of home, change and connection are told. Students from Codarts worked together on a week-long project titled Rhythm and Routes: an introduction to Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao . Three guest teachers were invited: Siegfried Hart, Lidrick Solognier and Roël Calister. Each of them has a personal connection to the islands and shares this through music. Tambú is one of the most important rhythmic foundations of the islands. The genre exists in different forms and expressions across Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, each with its own character and sound. Tambú is part of a shared rhythmic language that continues to evolve and is passed down from generation to generation. Over the course of a week, the students immersed themselves in this musical world. Together, they played, learned and made it their own. The performance is the result of this week, bringing together many different voices, backgrounds and stories in one place. Silk Roads & CaSa This project brings together two Codarts groups: Maqam and Modal Cultures along the Silk Roads and CaSa (Caribbean and South American) . The Silk Roads project is led by Jawa Manla, an oud player, singer, composer and teacher. She was born in Aleppo and raised in Damascus, where she began playing the oud at a young age, inspired by her father’s music at home. The CaSa project is led by another Codarts teacher: Juliana Martina, a singer, composer and educator. With roots in Curaçao and Colombia, and having moved to the Netherlands at a young age, migration has always been part of her story.
Throughout this varied programme, the octet alternates with more intimate settings: a sparkling trio, a colourful quartet, and a captivating solo work for one saxophone. The result is a dynamic concert experience in which the saxophone students take centre stage. Tickets available at the door.
