The ensemble Rumi&Shams, formed by the Iranian Mostafa Taleb (kamancheh) and Milad Mohammadi (tar), offers a musical homage to the extraordinary encounter between the great poet and mystic Rumi (also known as Mowlana) and his master Shams Tabrizi.

Martín Ros and Alice Félix are a duo who share a passion for music, creativity, and communication through our performances. Martín is a flutist with a penchant for free jazz who enjoys combining different cultures, styles, and sounds to create new musical ideas. He has a strong connection to acoustic music and a fondness for American and Latin American singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Jorge Drexler. Alice is a double bassist with extensive experience performing a wide-ranging repertoire. She is known for her excellent sense of rhythm and timing, which is deeply rooted in the music of Jorge Roeder, Shai Maestro, and Guillermo Klein. Together, we enjoy creating music that combines improvisation, emotion, and diverse musical influences. Our goal is always to connect with our audience and convey our own stories and emotions through the world of modern jazz.

Simone Magioncalda (guitar), Gonçalo Nunes (drums), and Alessandro Fongaro (double bass) form a trio that focuses on the power of ensemble playing and improvisation. The trio inspired by artists such as Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Mark Johnson and Joe Lovano performs a repertoire made of originals as well as some favourite existing pieces. Constantly embracing the moment and its vulnerabilities. The three interact with each other through a vast variety of textures and dynamics, creating space for the unexpected to unfold while letting melodies become their light of the path.
During Work In Progress Jazz Compositions, students from the Jazz Composition department bring their works in progress to life. An evening filled with new musical ideas, experimentation and compositions that are still taking shape.
On Friday 30 October, the Codarts Symphony Orchestra will perform a free lunch concert in the Grote Zaal at TivoliVredenburg. Conducted by Miguel Sepúlveda, winner of the ICCR Codarts Jury Prize, the orchestra will perform Shostakovich’s impressive Symphony No. 5. TivoliVredenburg’s lunch concerts offer a stage to emerging talent from Dutch conservatoires. The concert starts at 12:30 and admission is free. During your Bachelor’s, the focus is on developing a solid vocal-technical foundation, coupled with musicality and a sense of style. Laying this foundation during the weekly classes by the main subject teachers and the other teachers is crucial for a long and successful career. At Codarts team teaching is very important, as is evident from the weekly interpretation classes on Thursday afternoons. In these classes you work with a different main subject teacher and with external teachers such as Margreet Honig, who will give master classes. During coaching, much attention is given to breathing and body awareness, which will be further elaborated in drama and physical acting lessons. We also place much emphasis on strengthening your professional network outside the school through projects, auditions and master classes. Within the Master’s phase, the weekly class by the main subject teacher and the lessons with the coach take central stage. As a Master’s student you can participate in all the projects of the section, such as opera productions, choir projects, master classes, auditions and concerts. Classical music brass The atmosphere here is open and all are equal. At Codarts we really challenge you to make your personal mark. The world is at your feet and you set the course. This is where musicians become artists. Why study Brass Instruments at Codarts? Our team of teachers is varied and consists of people who are broadly represented in renowned national and international orchestras. We are a close-knit team of both very experienced and still up-and-coming musicians. We often work together in projects, in which we show respect for each other’s quality. Therefore, we teach like we would be playing together. For years already a well-known entity both inside and outside Codarts is the Codarts Brass Ensemble with its very own recognisable sound. Many a young talent who is now enjoying a splendid career grew up with this brass ensemble. For example, trombone players Jörgen van Rijen, Brandt Attema and Alexander Verbeek, trumpet players André Heuvelman and Jeroen Schippers, horn player Laurens Otto and tuba player Bernd van Echelpoel. They are not only trained technically and musically to become top musicians - both in orchestras and as solo performers - but much attention is also given to innovation and cultural entrepreneurship. As a student you will work on the question of how to bring your specific creations to the attention of various audiences. We train our students to become broadly oriented entrepreneurs. You take subjects such as brass ensemble and improvisation lessons, and others. You also participate in students’ concerts and activities in the lively city of Rotterdam. You visit an instrument builder and demonstrate what you’re capable of in mock-up auditions. We think it’s important for you to develop yourself as a person during your studies. Classical music organ Why study classical music organ at Codarts? The tradition of Organ study at Codarts Rotterdam has been extraordinary since 1930. Among the main subject teachers of the past are Arie J. Keyzer, Bernard Winsemius and Ben van Oosten. Our organ alumni hold many of important positions in churches. Not only because they are excellent players, but also because Codarts is the institute where you can obtain a Bachelor’s degree that allows you to become a professional church musician (valid in the Dutch protestant and Roman Catholic church). Many of our alumni are very much in demand as concert artists performing all over the world. At Codarts you are part of this extraordinary concert tradition. You also benefit from lessons in transcription, improvisation, new ways of interpretation and new ways in organ culture. Programme You’re provided with numerous opportunities to prepare yourself for a multifaceted career as a concert performer and teacher. You attend classes in ensemble playing and in improvisation, but also in organ history and organ building, arranging for organ and church music. We organise project weeks with interesting (international) excursions, for instance to St. Ouen, Rouen, Haarlem Philharmonie, Orgelpark Amsterdam and to organ manufacturing companies. And of course, we train and prepare you for national and international organ interpretation and improvisation competitions. On a regular basis, there are masterclasses given by world-renowned organists: Ben van Oosten, Michel Bouvard, Olivier Latry and others. Every November we offer masterclasses in Ratingen, together with the universities of Cologne and Saarbrücken. You will meet the organist of Notre Dame de Paris, Prof. Vincent Dubois, Zuzana Ferjencikova and invited professors on specific repertoire and interpretation issues. The organ curriculum allows you to take minors in, for example, choir conducting or harpsichord. Also, you can take minors with other departments of Codarts such as Global Musics or Jazz. As a master student, you can take optional classes in the art of transcription and improvisation in the 20 th century. Efe is already a familiar face within the Codarts Jazz community. In recent years, he has regularly been involved with Codarts as a guest teacher, sharing his artistic experience and professional expertise with students. His appointment as a permanent member of the faculty marks a new chapter in this collaboration. Born in Turkey and based in Rotterdam, Efe Erdem has built a broad, internationally oriented career spanning jazz, funk, soul, pop, theatre, Global Musics and contemporary performance. Alongside his work as a trombonist, he is active as a composer, arranger, producer and DJ. From Codarts student to international artist Efe began his classical training at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory before moving to the Netherlands to study at Codarts. During his time at Codarts, he worked with trombonists Bart van Lier and Ilja Reijngoud and graduated from the Jazz department in 2012. He subsequently continued his artistic development at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Since graduating, Efe has built an impressive international career. He has performed at and in leading festivals and venues, including North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and Blue Note Tokyo. He has also collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Tony Allen, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Roy Hargrove, Benny Golson, Snarky Puppy and KNOWER. Within the Dutch music scene, Efe has also worked with many well-known artists, including Anouk, DI-RECT, Candy Dulfer, Karsu, Ladies of Soul and Shirma Rouse. He has also performed as a soloist with the Metropole Orkest and regularly works with both the Metropole Orkest and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Efe is keen to bring this broad professional experience - both on stage and behind the scenes - into his teaching at Codarts. A versatile trombone section Head of Jazz and Head of Master of Music Yaşam Hancılar is delighted to welcome Efe as a permanent colleague: “We are very happy to have Efe joining our permanent Jazz team. He has already been part of our community as a guest teacher, so it feels very natural to now welcome him as a permanent colleague. Together with our trombone faculty member Ilja Reijngoud and Artist in Residence Andy Hunter, Efe brings an exciting combination of different generations, musical backgrounds and professional experiences to our trombone section. His versatility, international experience and curiosity about different musical worlds will be a great asset to our students and to the wider Jazz community at Codarts.” For Efe, education is closely connected to the same curiosity that characterises his own artistic practice. Why study Piano at Codarts? The choice for Codarts is a choice for the quality of the teachers and that of the students. Our goal is to teach you how to excellently master the profession. We also carefully coach you in developing your artistic ability. We provide you with a good starting position to work independently as a pianist. We are ambitious and provide a positive atmosphere in which everyone dares to learn. Programme In addition to your individual main subject lessons, we also take group lessons with all the teachers of the piano department (team teaching). In order to provide depth and specialist knowledge we invite internationally renowned pianists and teachers. You follow a versatile, varied, and dynamic learning trajectory that includes lectures, projects and workshops. We invite our students to listen to each other at open stage events and encourage you to give feedback; this is how you help each other to progress. There are many opportunities to perform both within and outside Codarts. In addition to the main subject lessons there are many classes to familiarise yourself with improvisation, sight reading, and transposing, as well as with the development of the piano and piano repertoire. Lessons are given on Steinway concert grand pianos. We use the historical pianoforte to understand the style of the classical and early Romantic composers. The Spirio grand piano allows for a modern way to record your own playing and play it back. Ensemble play is an important element of your training at Codarts. Starting in the first year, you attend the song class, where you make up a duo with a singer. In the second year, you start classes in chamber music, in which you are coached in ensembles of various compositions. The two-year Master’s study programme focuses on your artistically distinct qualities, in addition to further developing your piano skills and expanding your repertoire. In the Master’s programme you may choose a personal profile within the repertoire, such as chamber music or a particular music style or composer. You may also choose a collaboration with one of the other departments, for example Jazz or Tango. We take a realistic view of the professional field.
