> Home > Education > Preparatory courses Music Preparatory course Music For young people who dream of a music career and want to prepare for the Bachelor of Music, Codarts offers the Preparatory course in Music (Jazz and Classical Music). Preparatory course Music The Preparatory course in Music lasts one or two years and is usually taken alongside the final years of your secondary education (years 4 and 5 of havo, and years 5 and 6 of vwo) or as an independent course if you have already attained your secondary education diploma. The programme enables you to prepare thoroughly for Codarts’ higher professional music courses. You will be taught by conservatoire lecturers and will follow a weekly main subject lesson and a weekly theory class. For Jazz, you will also take one ensemble class per week. Please note: this Preparatory Programme in Music is different from the Codarts Lyceum preparatory track. The Codarts Lyceum is a secondary school in which dance and music lessons are part of the curriculum, rather than lessons you follow alongside your own secondary school. For non-EU/EER interested parties: You cannot apply for a residence permit based on this programme, as only full-time programmes are recognised as studies by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). Practical information Jazz or Classical Music. The Pop and Global Musics departments do not offer a preparatory course. For students in havo year 4 and 5 or vwo year 5 and 6 or as an independent course if you have already attained your secondary education diploma. Classical Music: 32 lessons, from September to May. Jazz: 20 lessons, from September to March. Fees and costs Application and entrance exam During the entrance examination we assess your musical aptitude and your suitability for your chosen instrument. The exam consists of a practical and a theoretical test. You will perform a short programme, and we will evaluate phrasing, rhythm, dynamics, intonation and technique. The entry level for the preparatory course is measured using the same admission requirements as for the Bachelor’s programme. If your level is not yet sufficient for bachelor entry, you may be offered the opportunity to study in the preparatory programme for one year, on the recommendation of the programme management. COMMA aims to facilitate maker/choreographers to become creative movement experts that can work with anyone, anywhere, anytime. The 2 year programme is an investment in themselves and their careers. Below you can read more about the curriculum of the Master Choreography. Year 1 (45 ECTS) Year 1 has an internally directed focus as students are guided by facilitators, lecturers, mentors and guest choreographers in developing their approach to the following: the potential trajectories and outcomes of artistic research taking a critical perspective on their own practices and disciplines with particular emphasis on the potential of co-creation testing potential questions, thinking creatively about modes of communication and generating movement based responses engaging with current theoretical, technological and design based perspectives entering into a productive discourse about their work Year 2 (45 ECTS) Year 2 has an externally directed focus where maker/choreographers test their acquired knowledge while developing creative and generative responses to alternative working contexts. At the end of the program the maker/choreographer will produce a final work that will be presented in a public context, this is supported by a thesis, exegesis, or exposition that documents their research process and places it within an appropriate theoretical or artistic context. Year 2 highlights the following: the ability to engage in wider discourses gaining an enriched knowledge of contexts beyond their own discipline and the challenges, strategies and potential of creative work within those contexts developing a repertoire of individual creative strategies and the ability to reflect on and generate ‘choreography’ related to these strategies Programme details Study in numbers

> Home > Student Life > More about Student Life > Meet our team Interview Lisa Rubsteck Team Around the Artist: Lisa Rubsteck What is your role as a physiotherapist/student psychologist at Codarts? As a student psychologist, I support students who are experiencing mental struggles during their studies. We work on these issues one-on-one. In addition, I also teach classes on mental health and mental skills, so that students learn how to take care of their mental well-being. What kind of problems or questions can students contact you about? Students can reach out to the student psychologists for various concerns. For example, if you're dealing with mental health issues due to increased stress, low mood, grief, procrastination, burnout, or performance anxiety. But you can also come to us to improve your performance skills, such as learning a pre-performance routine, preparing for an audition, or dealing with stage fright. We always look at whether we can help you within Codarts, and sometimes it's necessary to look externally for a suitable treatment. Can you give us an example of a ‘problem’ you’ve worked on with a student? Something I often see is that students struggle with a “perfectionist mind.” The bar is set extremely high, and there are many critical or disapproving thoughts about what you achieve. It feels like it’s never good enough. These are intense internal dialogues that can play out throughout the day. I personally like working with ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/training). This method helps you take a step back from perfectionist thoughts and recognize that perfectionist part of yourself. Because you are so much more than those thoughts. It’s beautiful to see when students learn to be kinder and more realistic with themselves, and in doing so, learn to coach themselves better. How can students make an appointment with you? How long have you worked at Codarts, and what did you do before becoming a physiotherapist/student psychologist? I started at Codarts in June 2025, and I also work in my own psychology practice, Mana Psychologie. Before joining Codarts, I worked as a psychologist and sports psychologist at Psyned, a national organization that connects clients with mental health needs to suitable psychologists. As a sports psychologist, I also work with the IKO/X20 skating team to train athletes in mental skills and provide space for conversations when needed. What do you enjoy most about your work at Codarts? What I enjoy most about working at Codarts is the diversity of questions and settings I encounter every day. I love being able to engage with students as a group on topics I find important, and also having the space for in-depth, personal one-on-one sessions. What’s unique about working at Codarts is that I get to see a student grow, because we often cross paths here. As a psychologist in a practice or institution, you don’t see that in the same way, and it makes my work incredibly rewarding! What would you consider the most important skill or knowledge a student should gain from their studies at Codarts? From a psychological perspective, it’s valuable to learn to look at yourself with more compassion and to be kind to what’s happening inside you. Many students place extremely high demands on themselves and live in a demanding world. For me, kindness and connection to what truly matters to you are essential so that you can make healthy choices and pursue your dreams.

Then sign up for internship lessons from a Codarts student! Third-year Music Education students at Codarts give individual internship lessons on their main instrument as part of their study programme. You will apply for the academic year 2026-2027. The internship lessons can take place between October 2026 and May 2027. For a fee of €100, you will receive 15 lessons of 30 minutes from a student from the Classical Music department. For a fee of €75, you will receive 10 lessons of 30 minutes from a student from the Jazz or Pop department. At the end of the lessons, you will automatically receive an invoice from Codarts' Finance Department. Click here for the registration form Terms and conditions: Placement is based on availability per instrument group and on a first-come, first-served basis. The lessons take place at the Codarts locations. For classical music, the lessons take place at Kruisplein (Kruisplein 26, Rotterdam) For jazz and pop, the lessons take place at WMDC (Pieter de Hoochweg 125, Rotterdam). To ensure the continuity of the lessons, they take place weekly on a fixed day and at times in consultation with the student. The lessons last half an hour, so please consider travel time if you need to get to Kruisplein or WMDC. The lessons will take place between May 2026 and October 2027. If you are placed for the lessons, you owe Codarts the full tuition fee and are obliged to attend the total number of lessons. Students who are not selected for the internship lessons will not remain on the waiting list for the following academic year. You must re-register every year to be eligible for the internship lessons. If you are selected for internship lessons, a Codarts student will contact you between October 2026 and April 2027. If you do not receive a message during this period, it was unfortunately not possible to place you for the 2026-2027 academic year. Please note that no correspondence regarding placement or the placement process will be entertained. If you are going to take internship lessons, you are responsible for arranging an instrument (before the start of the lessons). Rachel Beckles Willson, is a space for exploring how intercultural artistic practices can respond creatively to the social and environmental challenges that humanity faces today. An initial question for 2023 concerns what it means to be an artist, or an artistic researcher, in a time of climate crisis. How would we like to re-imagine our practices, inclusively, collectively and individually? How can diverse artistic researchers build audiences and communities in the wake of a pandemic? Specific research questions and artistic projects will be developed during the course of collaborative experimentation and reflection. The professorship falls within the programme line of Performance Practice. > Home > Education > Courses Contract lessons Contract lessons Contract music lessons Contract lessons at Codarts offer a very limited number of applicants the opportunity to take lessons outside the regular curriculum. You must have the intention to follow a bachelor's or master's programme at Codarts after the contract lessons. The admission procedure and deadline for registration are the same as for regular bachelor's/master's applicants. When registering, you submit a request for the desired (main) subject, the desired teacher, and the number of lessons you want to take. An admissions committee provides management advice about your admissibility. Positive advice does not automatically mean that management can place you. Actual placement depends, among other things, on the space in the teacher’s schedule and the availability of a classroom. In principle, contract lessons can be taken for a maximum of one year and should be taken for a minimum of 10 main subject lessons.
