For This introduction is meant for musicians who are interested in expanding their horizon, and is open to anyone with an interest in music therapy and with a willingness to musically engage and explore. The introduction: can be taken as continuous professional education (participants, who already have a HBO Bachelor’s degree Vaktherapie, can have the introductory course accredited at the ‘ Register Vaktherapie ’ after the introduction took place); is strongly advised for people seriously considering to apply for the Master in Music Therapy at Codarts; is also open to anyone interested to learn more about music therapy and curious to explore personal processes. Goal The introductory course provides professionals with the opportunity to experience music therapy, explore whether continuing into a Master Music Therapy is desirable and/or can enrich and deepen one’s own profession. The participant acquires basic knowledge of music therapeutic methods and receives information about the current professional practice. The introduction provides a first impression of the content of the Master in Music Therapy offered at Codarts, which will start with a new cohort in September 2028. The highly skilled and experienced tutors in this introduction are members of our faculty. The fee is €260,-. For Codarts alumni the fee is €210,-. Lunch is not included. Payment instructions will be sent via e-mail once you have registered via the online application form. Participation is only possible if the fee is paid beforehand. The maximum number of participants is 20. Final placement will be determined by the order in which registrations are received and will only be definitive once your payment has been received. Participants will be sent notice of received payment. After participation of the entire three days a Certificate of Attendance will be handed out. Take note: the certificate is not a qualification to practice, and does not guarantee acceptance into the Master. Regarding cancellation: It is possible to receive a full refund up to four weeks before the start of the introduction week. If the cancellation is received less than four weeks before the start, you can only receive a refund if a replacement participant is found by the organisation. The programme Daily workshops are from 09.30-16.30 hours, with a lunch break from 12.30-13.30 hours. The introduction will take place at ‘Kruisplein 26, 3012CC, Rotterdam’, which is a 3-minute walk from Rotterdam Central Station. Day 1: Introduction to Music Therapy There will be an introduction about the Master Music Therapy programme. Basic (active) music therapy theory and methods will be discussed and explored. Contemporary approaches and personal music preferences will be explored, discussed and linked to music therapy practice by improvisations. Day 2: Active Therapy and Improvisation in Music Therapy and Interactional Play In the morning there will be an active music therapy workshop on interactional play. Special focus will be on engagement skills and specific techniques in the application of improvisation in music therapy. In the afternoon there will be a further exploration of improvisation in music therapy with a focus upon the relationships between play and creativity and how these arise within music therapy, and our personal and professional identity in relation to the music therapy profession. Day 3: Receptive Music Therapy and Master Music Therapy programme Q&A In the morning there will be a workshop about key concepts of receptive music therapy. Experiential work will focus on music listening experiences to promote psychological insight, evoke imagery, alter mood, summon memories, assist learning and foster creativity. In the afternoon there will be time for discussion and questions concerning the profession/ practice and the Master programme. Pay attention: Please bring your own instrument every day (if portable)! Codarts and her partners from the Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab offer you the possibility to combine theory and practice in a five-year Dual Degree programme. International Bachelor of Arts and Culture Studies (IBACS) Liberal Arts and Sciences aan het Erasmus University College (EUC) Choosing a combination with IBACS allows you to dive deeper into the world of Art, exploring fields such as the History, Policy and Economics of Art, Aesthetics and of course Research Skills. You will become not only a skilled artist, but also be thoroughly acquainted with the workings of the art world, opening up a wide range of professional possibilities in the cultural sector. Choosing EUC allows you to choose your own major from four fields of study: Life Sciences, Social and Behavioural Studies, Economics and Business, and Humanities. If besides music you have a specific interest in, for example, psychology, politics or biology or if you are looking for a programme that allows you a lot of freedom in designing your own study path, then this is the programme for you. At Codarts the following majors participate in the Dual Degree: Jazz Global Musics Pop music Classical Music After completing the Dual Degree programme, you will receive two bachelor degrees: one from Erasmus University Rotterdam (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, depending on your programme and major) and one from Codarts. Where arts & science meet What? The Dual Degree programme allows you to simultaneously develop your artistic talent and your academic ambitions. You will have the option to combine the Bachelor of Music with one of two programmes at Erasmus University. Why? We believe that today’s world needs multidisciplinary experts who can address complex and multidimensional challenges. Your artistic practice will benefit from your contextual knowledge, critical view, and research skills – and vice versa: your theoretical work is fuelled by your creative mind-set and artistic experience. You will be able to build a future practice with two separate jobs, but you can also integrate both fields. The RASL Dual Degree is a challenging programme. You need to be able to shift your attention between study programmes, get a thrill out of navigating two different institutional and social cultures, be a star in time management and, most of all, you need to have a true appetite for both the artistic and the academic. If that sounds like you, then this is the programme for you! How? In order to make it possible for you to simultaneously study in two different programmes, we align both programmes in terms of schedules, making sure you will not have classes at Codarts and EUR in the same time slots. We also align the programmes in terms of competencies. By eliminating any overlapping content, we have reduced the study load of both programmes, creating a combined programme of five years. Each study year in the Dual Degree programme consists of around 60 EC, which is the same number as a regular Bachelor programme. Over the course of these five years you will be studying at both institutions simultaneously, keeping you rooted in both practices during your entire studies. Who? Master Screen Scoring Our programme focuses on developing both your musical and technical skills, with personal guidance from experts in the field. You work directly with filmmakers, allowing you to learn the profession through practical experience. Why study Screen Scoring at Codarts? At Codarts, we believe that you learn by doing. From day one, you work on industry-based projects. Through this hands-on experience, you continuously discover new aspects of the profession. For example, in the past year, our master’s students composed music for fifteen student films and animations. You start by developing a concept. This forms the blueprint of what your music should express in relation to the film. During meetings with directors and other clients, you learn how to communicate about music in film. Attention is also given to the psychological aspects of such collaborations. Programme The programme combines practice-oriented work with theoretical depth. In your principal subject lessons, you work on your compositions and learn to orchestrate from the perspective of film scoring. You take subjects such as film history and the philosophy of art. You can also choose additional subjects from the wide range offered at the Conservatoire to further refine your skills. You learn how to translate your concept into music and sound, acoustically and/or electronically. You receive weekly individual lessons in our analogue studio, where you work with classic synthesisers. In addition, you follow lessons in a film sound studio to mix and master your music in 5.1 surround sound. In projects such as OPUS 111 , you compose music for live ensembles – all focused on developing musical and sonic finesse to make your music speak as clearly as possible in a film context. Artistic Research Alongside the practice-based programme, you work on a two-year artistic research project. You choose a topic that fascinates you and is relevant to your film music practice – for example, the harmonic structures in a John Williams score or an in-depth analysis of the sound world of Hildur Guðnadóttir. You develop this topic across three academic research phases, resulting in a paper that can be consulted by fellow students. This research offers the opportunity to deepen your compositions further. Masterclasses and Collaborations During the master, you can take part in various projects, such as the special International Film Festival Rotterdam, where a large orchestra performs film music live to picture, composed by our students. You can also join the Musicalmakers project, in which you collaborate with lyricists from Music Theatre. In addition, there are regular masterclasses from renowned composers and artists. This gives you the chance to learn from the best and to build a network within the film and music industry. The ‘Team Around the Artist’ approach we use at Codarts ensures comprehensive support for our students, while our focus on the quality of professional working relationships creates a sense of pride and community. The candidate should preferably play an instrument from the organic instrumentation of the concert band and should be familiar with the concert band and fanfare repertoire. Conducting the 2nd Suite by G. Holst or an equivalent composition of your choice (dry, or with two pianos), one or two movements of which should be performed from memory. Only for students with practical experience: rehearsal of a work of your own choice (in 20 min.) with a harmony orchestra. Choral Conducting Candidates must submit a repertoire list Study of work specified in advance by the committee and a work of their own choice); the choir is formed by choral conducting students and the entrance examination candidates. Singing a portion of choral literature; topics include phrasing, text handling, purity, à vue singing, etc. Taking an aural test in the context of choral conducting; reading ability, knowledge of chords, recognition of mistakes, rhythmic skills, etc. will be addressed. Motivation and knowledge of the profession are discussed during an interview.
