> Home > Practical matters > Information events > Introduction week: Kick-Off Information healthcare Information on healthcare in the Netherlands General Practitioner, GP (Huisarts) GPs are your first point of contact for healthcare in the Netherlands. A GP treats patients for basic health problems. They can answer most of your general health questions and perform standard examinations. GPs also provide referrals to specialists at hospitals (dermatologist, gynaecologist, psychologist etc.). In the Netherlands you cannot see a hospital specialist without a referral from a GP. Without that referral, the health insurance will also not reimburse the costs. There are various GPs in Rotterdam, but you don’t have to worry if your GP will be qualified enough: all local doctors have the same education (six years of medical school and three years of specialisation afterwards). All Dutch GPs are regularly checked and monitored. The difference between GPs is not their knowledge, but their practice and approach to illness and treatment. Note that doctor’s assistants in the Netherlands do triage when you call them; this way they will judge if an appointment with the GP is necessary. How to find a doctor? Registering with a GP practice is one of the first things you should do when you arrive in Rotterdam, even before you need to see one. You are free to choose a GP that is based in the neighbourhood (district) where you live. To search for a GP in your area, go to the 'kies uw huisarts' website: www.kiesuwhuisarts.nl . This website is in Dutch, but it is quite easy to understand. Fill in your postal code and click on the banner that says ‘zoek’ (search). The website will display the GPs that are closest to your home. The best way to find a doctor that suits your needs is to contact them via email or phone and ask for the things that are important to you. Please note that not all doctors are able to take new patients! Your GP may wish to have a consultation appointment with you to go over your medical history. This is a good opportunity to have any questions about healthcare in the Netherlands answered. Student Life has a list of GPs in Rotterdam where students are welcome to register (see: External Medical Network Codarts Performing Arts Health Centre). GP out-of-hours service (Huisartsenpost, HAP) If you need medical assistance after office hours or during the weekend/public holidays , you should contact the GP out-of hours service (HAP). The HAP also includes a pharmacy. Always make an appointment before going to the HAP. Just like the GP doctor’s assistants, HAP assistants also do triage to judge if it is really necessary to visit the HAP. Hospital (Ziekenhuis) If immediate medical assistance is needed, you can get help 24 hours a day at the First Aid (EHBO) or Accident & Emergency (spoedeisende hulp, SEH) at any hospital. Emergency If you need the police, fire and/or ambulance services in a serious life-threatening situation, call the (European) emergency telephone number: 112 Medication Medication is bought from pharmacies (apotheken) with a prescription from the GP or another doctor. For non prescription medication such as aspirin or cough medicine, you can purchase them directly off the shelf at pharmacies, or drugstores (drogisterij). Health food stores (e.g. De Tuinen) sell alternative/herbal medications and other nutrition supplements. Tips If you already know some people living in your neighbourhood, it is smart to ask them about their experiences with their local GPs. Before making an appointment with any healthcare practitioner, check your insurance policy to inquire which treatments are fully or partially covered by your insurance to avoid unexpected costs afterwards. Healthcare in the Netherlands is never for free (even if Codarts has made arrangements for students). Be aware that you will often have to pay the costs yourself before it gets (partially) reimbursed by your health insurance company. So always have cash and/or a bank pass or credit card with you when you visit a medical practitioner. Always ask for an original receipt/bill of your medical expenses (treatments, medicines etc.). You will need this receipt to file a claim with your health insurance company.
> Home > Practical matters > Practical > Housing Additional costs Additional costs If the rent is not including energy costs and local taxes you will have to take care of this yourself. It is preferable to find a place to live where you pay a rent ‘including’ additional costs but not always possible. If the rent is not including energy and local tax (ask the landlord and find out in the contract) and you pay costs like energy, water, electricity, local tax, internet, cable tv / radio yourself, please mind the following: Living with several people in the house you share those costs. Energy companies usually make a contract with one person – the ‘main tenant’ – so agree (preferably in writing) with your fellow tenants about the division and the payment of the costs. Keep an eye on your energy meters (gas, electricity, water). Write down the digits the moment you start living in your apartment and compare them with a final account or an annual check by the energy company. Never ignore letters or invoices from companies like Eneco, Evides, CVZ, city hall etc. Most of the time they are important! Find someone who speaks Dutch to help you translate; if it is not clear, ask the student counsellor for advice. Municipal and water board taxes International students renting their own apartment (usually not a room with shared facilities and inclusive rent) should expect two tax bills, to be sent to the main resident on a yearly basis: one for municipal tax (gemeentelijke belasting) and another one for water board tax (waterschapsbelasting). Domestic waste tax (afvalstoffenheffing) is meant to cover the costs of collection and processing of domestic waste. This has to be paid by every household. Sometimes the owner has to pay, that depends on your rental contract. Students in the Netherlands that are not able to pay their municipal or water board taxes, may be eligible for a full or partial remission (kwijtschelding). The municipality will assess whether or not a student qualifies for remission based on their income, property and valuables. Water board taxes are levied by the Regional Tax Group (Regionale Belasting Groep). International students can also apply for remission (kwijtschelding) of the water board tax upon receipt of their tax bill. It is also a condition for getting a residence permit (non-EU students). Codarts strongly recommends students to arrange a good and complete insurance with AON ( Home | Aon Student Insurance ). In case of Aon, you can login on this page: Service & Contact Other important insurances In addition to a health insurance, it is very important to have coverage for accidents, third party liability, legal aid, fire and theft, and travel luggage. Check your insurance company for possibilities. Health insurance letter CAK If you have received a letter from the CAK (the government organisation that checks whether you have the correct Dutch health insurance), regarding your insurance obligation it’s important to contact the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) for an assessment of your insurance position. You need to take action within three months or you will receive a fine of approximately €400,-. Even if you incorrectly received the letter from the CAK. Healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) In order to ensure that the healthcare premium is affordable for everyone, there is a healthcare allowance. Healthcare allowance covers a part of the costs of the premium. Eligibility for the healthcare allowance depends on your income. If you earn less than a certain income you will be entitled to the healthcare allowance. The lower the income, the higher the allowance will be. The easiest way to apply for ‘zorgtoeslag’ is online with your DigiD. If you do not have a DigiD, make sure to apply for one via this link https://www.digid.nl/en/ .
> Home > Practical matters > Practical > Enrolment and withdrawal > Enrolment Entry requirements Prior education requirements Admission to Bachelor’s programme To be enrolled in a bachelor's programme at Codarts, the prospective student must hold at least a diploma at mbo level 4, havo, or vwo (NLQF-4 / EQF-4) or an equivalent foreign certificate at this level. Insufficient prior education for admission to Bachelor If the prospective student cannot provide a diploma for enrolment in a bachelor's programme, they can participate in an entrance examination (NOA-test). The cost of this examination is €75,- which must be paid by the prospective student prior to the examination. Access to the entrance examination is only granted after placement in the programme. The entrance examination must be passed before the start of the academic year. A positive result from the entrance examination only grants access to a programme at Codarts and is valid for one year. Click here for an example Admission to Master’s programme For the Master of Music programme, prospective students must hold a certificate from a relevant Dutch bachelor's programme or an equivalent certificate from a programme abroad (NLQF-6 / EQF-6). For the Master of Arts Therapies programme, prospective students must hold a certificate from a Dutch bachelor's programme or an equivalent certificate from a programme abroad (NLQF-6 / EQF-6). Insufficient prior education for admission to Master If the prospective student does not hold a bachelor's degree, they can still be enrolled in a master's programme in exceptional cases, provided they have sufficient knowledge, understanding, and skills at the level of a bachelor's degree. In such cases, the programme management will request permission from the Executive Board, which will be advised by the Exam Board. Demonstrating prior education requirements The prospective student can demonstrate that the prior education requirement has been met by: In the case of a diploma issued in the Netherlands: a certified copy of an admissible diploma, including a certified copy of the accompanying grade list, if verification of the prior education and diploma via Studielink is not possible; In the case of a diploma issued outside the Netherlands, the original diploma, including the accompanying grade list, must be shown to the Student Affairs department. If the institution where the prospective student obtained their diploma is closed, a certified copy of the diploma can also be requested from another official body in the country where the diploma was issued, such as a notary or a municipal (government) agency.

Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) ensures that an extra check can be done when logging in to determine the identity of the person logging in with certainty. You will then have to verify your login via your mobile phone. You will also come across MFA, for example, when logging in to your bank and/or DigiD. Follow the steps in the manual below to install MFA on your mobile phone. In principle, you only have to go through these steps once, and it will take you a maximum of 5 minutes. Codarts Rotterdam offers a vibrant and inspiring environment where you can grow artistically, academically, and personally. Each year we receive a large number of Erasmus+ applications and welcome between 15- 20 Erasmus students per year. You could be one of them! Studying in Rotterdam means immersing yourself in Dutch culture, building meaningful international connections, and discovering new dimensions of yourself—both as a student and as an artist. Codarts collaborates with numerous partner institutions throughout Europe. Wondering if your school is one of them? Check with the International Office at your home institution. Even if it's not a partner, Codarts still accepts applications from non-partner schools. IMPORTANT: For 2026-2027 we unfortunately will not offer any Erasmus+ study places at our Dance department, Circus department, and for the Music Therapy and Dance Movement Therapy. It is advisable that you communicate your wish to withdraw to your student advisor, the college dean, and the head of your programme. Your request for withdrawal will be passed on to Codarts, after which we will process your request. Please note: you are personally responsible for cancelling your student grant (studiefinanciering) and student travel card through DUO. Reimbursement of tuition fees If you withdraw from your studies and communicate this through Studielink during the period from September 1 to May 31, you will be eligible for a refund of any excess fees you may have paid. In this case, you will only be required to pay tuition fees for the period during which you were enrolled. You will be entitled to reimbursement of one-twelfth of the tuition fees payable for each remaining month of the academic year following your withdrawal. This applies to both the statutory tuition fees and the fees payable to our institution. Please note: if you have received a Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld (Proof of Payment of Tuition Fees) from Codarts, you will not be eligible for a refund of the excess tuition fees paid. If you nevertheless want to be considered for a refund, you must submit to the Academic Service Center (ASC) the original Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld /Proof of Payment of Tuition Fees you received from Codarts. Withdrawal or deregistration before September 1 If you withdraw your application for the new academic year through Studielink before September 1, you will not be required to pay tuition fees for the new academic year. Your direct debit mandate will be cancelled in this case, and any excess fees you may have paid for the new academic year will be automatically reimbursed. Withdrawal after September 1 September to May (inclusive) Once your request to withdraw from your course has been processed by the Administrative Service Center, you will receive a confirmation through Studielink. If you paid the fees by direct debit mandate, this will be cancelled and you will (if applicable) receive a refund of any excess tuition fees you may have paid. Date of withdrawal: you will be withdrawn as a student at Codarts at the end of the month in which you submitted your withdrawal request. Example March 10: This is the date when you submitted your request for withdrawal through Studielink. March 31: You will be withdrawn from the college at the end of this month. In this case, you will be enrolled until March 31. April 1: On April 1, you will officially cease to be a student at Codarts. In this case, you will be required to pay tuition fees for the months September through March. You will be eligible for a refund of any tuition fees paid in excess. June to August (inclusive) If you submit a request for withdrawal during the months of June, July or August, you will not be entitled to restitution. No refunds will be issued for the months of July and August. You will be notified once your request to withdraw from your course has been processed by the Administrative Service Center. Deregistration after graduation If you are graduating at the end of the academic year, you will not be required to personally deregister through Studielink. In this case, your registration will be terminated automatically on August 31. If you graduate before this date, you are required to submit a deregistration request through Studielink. You must do so after receiving an email confirmation from the Examinations Committee ( Examencommissie ) that your degree has been conferred. After the Administrative Service Center has processed your deregistration, you will receive a written confirmation. The deregistration process and the refund of the tuition fees will proceed in the same way as the process for withdrawing from your studies – see xxxx. Please note: you are required to personally cancel your student grant ( studiefinanciering ) and student travel card through DUO. Cancelling student grant and student travel card You are always personally responsible for cancelling your student grant and student travel card. You can check with Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) until when you are entitled to the student grant and when this must be cancelled. Please note: if you are not enrolled at our institution, you will not be entitled to a student grant or travel card. You will be required to repay DUO any unduly received student grant funds and undue use of the student travel card, including interest. In some cases, you may also be required to pay a fine.
