Admission
To enrol at Codarts you should be in possession of a havo diploma, mbo bve-level 4 or a (foreign) certificate of equivalent value, in which the subject packet or the profile is of secondary importance. In special cases the above diploma demands can be set aside. The student-to-be then has the possibility to take a capacity test, to check if there is sufficient general development to be able to follow the study. The fees for this test are charged to the student-to-be.

After registering in Studielink, you will receive login details for Osiris Aanmelding (read the manual here).
Do not create a new account in Osiris Application—use the credentials you received. In some cases, the email with your username and password may end up in your spam folder, so be sure to check it.
Complete your application and answer the additional questions in Osiris. Make sure to have the following documents ready:- Motivation letter (instructions: click here)
- Musical CV (detailing all your previous musical activities and experience)
- Online portfolio for the pre-selection: music video recordings or composition portfolio (see step 2 below)
Your application for the entrance exam will only be processed if your registration in both Studielink and Osiris is completed before the application deadline. -
Step 2: Online portfolio and pre-selection
Based on your online portfolio submitted in Osiris Aanmelding, the admissions committee will decide whether you are invited to take an entrance exam at Codarts. You will receive an email with the result of the pre-selection from the Administrative Service Centre (ASC). All communication will take place via email, using the address you provided during your initial application. Please make sure to check your email regularly.
If you are applying for composition as main subject, please see the instruction below this step.
Instruments or Voice as Main Subject
For the pre-selection, you must submit at least three video recordings of your musical performance, either solo or in an ensemble. These recordings must show contrasting styles by different composers. There is no minimum or maximum duration for the videos. Please ensure that you meet the specific admission requirements for your instrument as published at the bottom of this page.
You can upload your video links (YouTube, Google Drive Vimeo) in Osiris Aanmelding. Make sure that access to your files is set to public so the admissions committee can view your material without restrictions. CDs, DVDs, and mp3 files are not accepted.
Important: You must be clearly visible in your video recordings so the committee can accurately assess your skills, technique, and potential.
Composition as Main Subject
For the pre-selection, you must submit up to three of your most representative works showing your stylistic development. These can include written scores, video recordings, or audio files – all media are accepted.- Upload your portfolio via Google Drive link in Osiris Aanmelding.
- Also provide a description of the works (PDF) and a motivation letter (A4) via this Google Drive link.
- You may additionally include separate links to videos (for example, YouTube or Vimeo).
- Make sure all links are set to public access so the admissions committee can view your materials.
These works must demonstrate sufficient compositional talent.

Step 3: Entrance exam
During the entrance exam, your talent, knowledge, skills, and potential for further development will be assessed. The entrance exam consists of three components:
1. Practical part
In the practical exam, you will demonstrate your musical abilities, technical skills, and artistic potential. Please ensure that you meet the specific admission requirements for your instrument as published at the bottom of this page.
Piano accompaniment will be available during the live exam (except for harp, organ, piano, composition, and percussion). You are also welcome to bring your own accompanist. If you choose to make use of Codarts’ accompanist, please ensure that your repertoire is mainstream and accessible for performance by the pianist. If you would like to present less familiar or complex repertoire, we recommend bringing your own accompanist so that your performance can be presented in the best possible way.
2. Theoretical part
The theoretical part assesses your knowledge of music theory. [Click here for the specific requirements.]
3. Motivation interview
During the interview, we will discuss:- Your general motivation.
- Your expectations and image you have of Codarts.
- Your perspective on disciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity.
Location
Practical entrance exams for candidates residing in the Netherlands take place exclusively live at Codarts in Rotterdam.
The admissions committee strongly prefers to hear candidates live in Rotterdam, as this provides a clearer impression and gives candidates a better opportunity to present themselves. If you live outside the Netherlands, you may choose whether to take the entrance exam live in Rotterdam or online. This choice can only be made once in Osiris Aanmelding (during step 2) and cannot be changed afterwards.
Please note: The practical entrance exam for Orchestral and Choral Conducting will exclusively take place in Rotterdam. -
Step 4: Results of the entrance exam
Results of the entrance exam
The final decision about admission will be made jointly by the programme management and the admissions committee. You will receive the result of the entrance exam by email. Please note that Codarts has a limited number of study places available; therefore, it may take some time before you receive the final outcome of your admission by email.
Placement or waiting list
Because only a limited number of students can be admitted, it is possible that qualified candidates may be placed on a waiting list once the maximum number of students has been reached. Candidates who are offered a place are requested to confirm within one month whether they will enrol in the programme.
Admission requirements
Specific admission requirements may apply to your chosen main subject for both the pre-selection and the practical entrance exam. You can find these requirements listed below, organized by instrument. Unless stated otherwise, you may present either the same repertoire or different repertoire at the pre-selection and the entrance exam, provided that it meets the specific requirements.
