As of that date David Lauwen succeeds Renate Eringa, who has been interim president since October 2022. Lauwen's appointment took place after consultation with an advisory committee consisting of members of the Executive Board team, the head of Human Resources and the participation council. The Supervisory Board is pleased with Lauwen's appointment. Paul Zevenbergen, chairman of the Supervisory Board: "David is a decisive and connecting director. His expertise lies in strategy, finance and organizational development, both in the public and private sector. In addition, he has a great fondness for education, art and culture. We are convinced that together with staff, students and the institutions involved with Codarts in Rotterdam, he will give further direction to the future of the university. With our shared passion for art and education, I am determined to work with the motivated team and our students to create a creative and inspiring environment for the new generation of talents. ” About David Lauwen Lauwen began his career as a lecturer-researcher in economics at Utrecht University. He then worked a.o. as a financial director at an international family business. In 2011 he founded Het Creatief Kapitaal, where as managing director he advises cultural institutions and creative companies strategically and financially, including the Filmfonds, EYE Filmmuseum, the Ministry of OCW, Excelsior Recordings and Concertlab. Lauwen also has extensive experience in management and supervision. For example, he is a trainer and facilitator at the Erasmus Governance Institute, where he shares his knowledge with future supervisors and directors. In addition, he sits on the Supervisory Board of the Melkweg, Omroep Zwart and Brabant C, and previously BNNVARA. Lauwen has a great love for art and culture and is a musician. He is 49 years old, married to Marie-Louise, has four children and lives in Brabant.
The talents play in the orchestra and are accompanied by conductors and other musicians. They also take part in education and chamber music projects. The aim of the orchestra academy is to prepare the talents and give them experience in orchestral practice. Tuba student Yanyi Zeng (student of Hendrik Jan Renes) has been accepted at the Academy for season 2024-2025.
These renowned dance awards will be presented at the Nederlandse Dansdagen Gala on Friday 4 October at 20.00 at Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht. All nominated companies, choreographers and dancers have delivered exceptional artistic quality in the past 2023-2024 season, according to the juries. In the "most impressive dance achievement 2024" category, Tarek Rammo and Matilde Tommasini are two of the three nominees. Both studied at Codarts in the past and have built an impressive career after graduating. Tarek Rammo graduated from Codarts Circus Arts in 2011 and has been nominated for his role in Tipping Point (Pia Meuthen/Panama Pictures) The jury on Tarek: Tarek Rammo couples fabulous physical skills with a great sense of theatre. In Tipping Point, where the world swings and sways, he focuses on the subtlety of what he narrates with a layered, poetically charged body language that balances between acrobatics and dance. Matilde Tommasini graduated from our Bachelor of Dance programme in 2017 and has been nominated for her role in Khôra (Astrid Boons/Korzo). The jury on Matilde: The individuality as well as the ability to be fluid of the charismatic dancer Matilde Tommasini leads in Khôra by Astrid Boons to a range of new physical expression possibilities. In this work, Matilde is a force of nature uninhibitedly exploring the extremes of the body. We congratulate all nominees on their nominations and wish them the best of luck!
The Andrew Moreno Trio took on saxophonist Femke Mooren and drummer Rafael Slors in the exciting final. Both promising artists with great potential. The j ury spoke the following words about the winner: "We witnessed an extremely dynamic, versatile and mature trio with Andrew in a clear and leading role. He managed to pick the right, high-level players to accompany him on a journey thru his own musical universe. The trio showed an eclectic set of edgy and free, but yet accessible songs and is ready to play the big festivals straight away!"
The 2024 winners: Third-year Bachelor of Dance in Education student Anne Hijmissen received a scholarship from the Corrie Hartong Dance Fund / Friends of Codarts Foundation. Bachelor of Dance students Oriana Mestre Oliveira (3rd year) and Tomas Fidalgo Simões Lucas da Silva (2nd year) received a scholarship from the Kylián Foundation after the performance Talent On The Move in Theater Rotterdam. Bachelor of Dance students Marc Sayer Cassú (3rd year), Ethel Desdames (3rd year), Agnese Biavati (2nd year) and Haley Diallo Gabarró (2nd year) received a scholarship from the Corrie Hartong Dance Fund / Friends of Codarts Foundation that same evening.
Since Codarts was founded in 1978, our institution has played a pioneering role. At the time, we were the first conservatoire outside the United States to offer the study programme Jazz. This initiative opened the door to a wide range of musical styles alongside the classical tradition. In 1990, pianist Jan Laurens Hartong and musicologist Joep Bor founded the World Music Academy as part of the Rotterdam Conservatoire. This has grown into the unique and diverse World Music Academy with various specialisations. In 2024, World Music will remain a valuable and unique part of Codarts' educational portfolio. However, in view of the changing world and the evolving expectations of both professionals and students, it is time to redesign World Music. Therefore, for one year (academic year 2024-2025), Codarts will not be admitting new students to the Latin, Turkish Music and Argentinean Tango specialisations within World Music. This will allow time and space for the redesign process. We will keep you informed of developments through this website in the coming period.
At this year's annual Festival Klassiek in het Zand in Veenendaal, a special incentive prize was awarded to talented Portuguese horn player Julia Montero from the Codarts Classical Music department by Ard de Jong. This award ceremony was one of the highlights of the festival. Julia Montero, a rising star in the classical music world, was honoured for her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft. The commission praised her virtuosity and expressiveness on stage, as well as her ability to deeply move the audience with her playing. The festival, known for its diversity of musical genres and cultural activities, attracted a large number of visitors again this year. Klassiek in het Zand offers a stage to both established and emerging artists.
