Jonathan Gaubert about the minor Music Therapy

Jonathan Gaubert is studying the electric bass in the pop department at Codarts. His focus is on becoming a skilled metal bass player. Jonathan chose Introduction to Music Therapy as a minor because he has always been interested in psychology, but never had the chance to study it. He tells us about how he experienced the minor:

“I think for me, this is an incredible introduction to the profession of music therapist. Especially because I had no idea what Music Therapy implicated. I am more than happy with how it’s currently going. The experience has given me a fresh perspective on psychology, combining musical methods and highlighting the therapeutic potential of music. It has not only developed my understanding of psychology but also offered insights into the fascinating mechanisms of the brain.

The practical exercises helped me sharpening my communication skills in various contexts, especially with different patient populations. Analyzing situations from both the present moment and the therapist's perspective has been a valuable thing I've worked on, among others. The theoretical lessons have revived my interest in scientific research, encouraging me to delve into articles and psychoeducation about diseases and disorders beyond my immediate surroundings. This logical approach was missing in my instrument-focused studies, and I am very pleased to have both perspectives now.

On a professional level, the more I learn about psychology, the more fascinated I become. The link between music and psychology, exploring physical health aspects such as re-education and pain tolerance, is becoming more and more interesting.  While this scientific domain is relatively new, with music therapy as a science starting  after World War II, my initial lessons in the minor have intensified my interest in exploring music therapy and psychology further.

I highly recommend this minor, because music therapy is about the integration of music and science in understanding and helping others,. It serves as a valuable return to scientific thinking, learning aspects of psychology and as an introduction to the Master of Music Therapy, where the depths of the profession will be studied!”
