PRE-SELECTION VIDEO AUDITION PROCEDURE and HOW TO APPLY
(English only)

 

For candidates coming  from countries outside the European continent, we offer a different procedure.

If you are not able to come to one of our live auditions you can apply for a pre-selection audition via video. After the pre-selection, you will be informed whether you have to come by for a live final audition.

Deadline for registration at Studielink: 15 January , 2024.

Deadline for submission of a video audition is 29 January , 2024.

Please note that only fully registered applicants, following the next steps, will be taken into consideration!

 

Information regarding the Online application and audition procedure

STEPS:

1.
 To apply for the audition: go to Codarts Rotterdam: Register Studielink and register yourself for the audition.

 

2. After a complete registration (Studielink as well as myapplication.codarts.nl) you will receive an email with your login codes, as well as how to submit your video application.
The login codes will be sent to you after 15th of January.

3. Create your video and submit it.

 

Tips!
Please start preparing and filming your video on time, so as soon as you receive your login codes you are ready to upload.

 

In February  2024 results of the pre-selection will be made known via email.

 

Consequently  candidates will be informed if additional video material needs to be sent for the final selection and  eventual invitation for the live auditions.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLMENT

To enrol at Codarts you should be in possession of a (Dutch) havo diploma, mbo bve-level 4 or a (foreign) certificate of equivalent value. For either of these the subject profile of the previous education is of secondary importance. In special cases the above diploma demands can be set aside. The student-to-be then has the possibility to take a capacity test, to check if there is sufficient general development to be able to follow the study. The fees for this test are charged to the student-to-be.

                                                                                             

Requirements for enrolment at Codarts*

  • A diploma from your secondary (high) school (vwo, havo, mbo level 4 regardless of subject profile) or a foreign diploma of equivalent level, or of a higher level**
  • Passing successfully definitive selection of the audition
  • Payment of the schools tuition fee for that year
  • A valid residential address in the Netherlands before 1st October 2023 (registration with local municipality)
  • Non European candidates must apply for a residence permit
  • The required level of the English language for the bachelor’s programme is a minimum score of IELTS (Academic) 5,5 or an equivalent TOEFL score***

 

*   Subject to changes in the law.
** Students without an upper Secondary Education diploma can only be admitted to Codarts after passing a general capacity test.
*** Not required yet for audition, only after acceptance.

 

AUDITION CRITERIA

Audition assessment criteria

The audition committee consists of faculty members of the Codarts BA Dance programme. The committee works according to guidelines concerning the dance technical and artistic aspects of your presentation.

They evaluate the suitability of the candidates by the following criteria:

  • An articulate body and physical potential
  • Talent and potential for development
  • Exhibits feeling for coordination, musicality and the use of space
  • Technical dance skills
  • Exhibits intrinsic feeling for movement and expression in dance
  • Creative potential
  • Artistic qualities
  • Willingness, commitment, openness, honesty, communicative skills and curiosity

In general, however, given the intensive physical training during the four-year programme,  we advise applicants in this formative stage of their performance careers that they are not older than 20 years if you audition for the 1st year, 22 years if you audition for the 2nd year.

 

Dress code video audition/clothing requirements:

  • Tight-fitting clothing, a unitard, or tights and tight-fitting top, or leotard that clearly enables the viewer to observe your technique.
  • Do not wear skirts or baggy shorts, loose fitting tee-shirts or costumes.
  • Ballet shoes are obliged for ballet section.

 

 

The video and filming recommendations:

  • Your full name should be in the video tag/title and on upload.
  • It is to your benefit to create the best possible conditions for filming, choose a place with minimal visual distractions for the viewer and ensure you have adequate lighting, especially from the front and side. Avoid placing yourself in front of a strong light source (for example, a window at your back).
  • Be sure you are visible within the frame for the duration of the recording.
  • Review your video before submitting to check for playback quality of the image and sound.
  • Professionally recorded video is not required.
  • Please note that you can send only one video file, edited and including all required components and no longer than 15 - 25 Min.
  • The video needs to be uploaded to Planet E-stream.

 

Video content

1. Personal introduction

  • A close-up shot, from the waist up.
  • Clearly state your full name, current city, country of birth and country of residence (if different).
  • Your age and height
  • Provide a brief history of your previous dance training, years of training and techniques / styles
  • When do you expect to graduate your high school? Specify the year.
  • Please elaborate on why you have chosen to apply to Codarts Rotterdam and your motivation to continue and pursue a dance career.
  • Your personal goals
  • Any other talents or interests

 

2. Demonstration of flexibility

On the floor, including:

  • Full forward stretches demonstrating length of the hamstrings
  • Front splits both sides
  • Second position split, including forward bend
  • Butterfly (hip opener) on the back and on the stomach
  • Backbend (Cambré) while lying on the stomach

 

3. Demonstration of ballet (only one side per exercise)

At the barre:

  • Plié and Grand Plié in all positions
  • Adagio, including demonstration of balance (Attitude back and Passé/Retiré)
  • Grand Battements

 

Center:

  • Tendus (Battement Dégagé) and Battement Jeté combined, from 5th position, and including pirouettes
  • Adagio
  • Waltz, including pirouettes
  • Petit Allegro
  • Grand Allegro

 

 

4. Demonstration of modern /contemporary technique

Two different combinations in the center:

  • Combinations of choice, demonstrating variety in dynamics and space orientation, including going on the floor and travelling through the space.

 

5. Demonstration of improvisation up to 2 minutes in length

Free choice, demonstrating your individuality, creativity, autonomy and artistic expression

 

6. Demonstration of solo up to 2 minutes in length

  • A prepared solo demonstrating your craftsmanship, technique and artistic expression
  • State the title of the solo and the choreographer.
  • The solo should preferably be self-choreographed or with the help by a teacher/choreographer.
