Shuann Chai succeeds Bart van de Roer, who was associated with Codarts in that position for many years and has now secured a position at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. Shuann Chai not only brings with her a broad knowledge of the major piano repertoire, but also strengthens the Codarts team with her passion and specialisation for historical pianos. In doing so, she complements the current team which consists of Nino Gvetadze (principal study teacher), Maarten van Veen (repertoire class with specialisation in 20th/21st century music), Ellyne Wieringa (young talent class and methodology subjects piano) and Roderigo Robles de Medina (coordinator). The classical piano department at Codarts is characterised by intensive contact between teachers, students and departmental representation through team teaching, among other things. The department has excellent facilities: for instance, all grand pianos (Steinway and Yamaha) have recently been renewed and there is both a Yamaha Enspire disklavier and a Steinway Spirio | r present. There are monthly joint group lessons and 'informed practice' sessions, and master classes are organised regularly. A wide range of styles and roles (accompanying, chamber music, solo, orchestral musician) are covered in the curriculum so that students are optimally prepared for the professional field.
‘RASL: Re-Imagining Tomorrow’ is a short film (35 min) about education at the intersection of art, science and society. In the film, a ‘magical’ narrator invites us to look at reality as a composition in which multiple opinions, perspectives, social forces, cultural forces and forces of nature dance with each other; endlessly layered. Present at the premiere were dozens of interested parties, from the education sector (from fellow art education institutions to technical universities), the cultural sector (from museums to music venues) and representatives of various civil society organisations, among others. Our bachelor's programme in Dance has held a prominent position for many years and has once again received the label of 'top-rated programme' this year, with a maximum score. The bachelor's programmes in Dance Education, Music Education, Music Theatre, Circus Arts, and the Conservatory have also been given the label 'top-rated programme'. A good and safe learning environment for our students and staff is what we all strive for at Codarts. Over the past year, we've worked hard to take steps towards achieving this ambition. It's all the more gratifying to receive this recognition because it shows that we're on the right path. We will do everything in our power to maintain and further develop this. On Friday 9 February, Codarts Research organised 'A Celebration of Artistic Research in World Music', led by Professor Rachel Beckles Willson. During this special audiovisual event, which took place at our venue WMDC, six Codarts researchers shared their work on intercultural traditions - from Argentina and India to West Asia - and showed how this is connected to their musical practice. 'A Celebration of Artistic Research in World Music' was more than an exploration - it was a showcase of the vibrant tapestry of artistic research within the Codarts community. We celebrated the creativity and research into world music at Codarts and gave a behind-the-scenes look at the work of the diverse international team. World music research serves as a bridge to a more intercultural, pluralistic society. It allows us to gain deeper insight into the meaning and context behind the music and cultures we work with. Therefore, this event aimed to share the recent publications of our Codarts researchers and show how this research directly affects their music practice. We welcomed interested Codarts students and staff, as well as guests from outside Codarts who were interested in the topic. More information about the programme can be found here .
Isaiah en Sarah received the prize for their duet MEGASTRUCTURE. The prize, a sum of 100,000 euros and thus the largest dance award for young choreographers of duets, was awarded for the fifth time this year. Isaiah graduated from Codarts' Bachelor of Dance programme in 2021. Choreographers Isaiah Wilson (Codarts Dance alumnus) and Sarah Baltzinger won the XL Production Award at the finals of the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) on June 24. 'MEGASTRUCTURE is a powerful and bold performance,' said the jury report. 'The fantastic use of space and humor make for an engaging and compelling experience. With MEGASTRUCTURE the choreographers create an intriguing composition and the choice not to use music is brave and captivating. What is surprising and curious is the theatricality of the piece. The confidence and authenticity made it a truly remarkable and courageous performance.' Furthermore, Codarts Dance alumni Borna Babić and Eliana Stragapede won the Codarts Rotterdam partnership award with their duet AMAE. Next season they will work with Bachelor of Dance students on a choreography for the Talent On The Move Tour 2024.
Last March, during a Codarts project week, a special collaboration took place. Under the supervision of Codarts alumnus / choreographer Jordy Dik, nine Codarts students worked for a week on a project in which they tell the stories of elderly people with dementia through dance and music. The community project took place in the context of ‘Dance On, Pass On, Dream On’ (DoPoDo) and is now captured in a short, moving documentary. DoPoDo is a four-year Creative Europe-funded cooperation project addressing ageism in the dance sector and in society. 11 renowned European dance institutions – Codarts among others- are working towards a Europe where older dancers are valued for their experience and charisma, where our common European dance heritage is cherished and serves to inspire younger artists, and where older people are respected and engage in meaningful, creative activities.
The awards, € 10,000 for Sinking Sideways and € 5,000 for Guus Bok , were presented during the festive opening of the 2021-2022 academic year of Codarts in Theater Rotterdam by Katinka van Enkhuizen, programmer at Theater Rotterdam, and Jeroen van Breugel, business manager of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and director of Stichting Ondernemersbelangen Rotterdam (SOR). SOR wants to give young enterprising artists a boost through the award. The namesake of the award, Henri Winkelman (1937-2010), was a board member of SOR for many years. The award unites his ideas in two areas: art and entrepreneurship. Project plan SOR has been awarding the HWA annually to alumni of the Willem de Kooning Academy since 2013. This year, for the first time, former Codarts students (graduated in or after 2012) were able to compete for the award. Candidates were required to submit a comprehensive project plan. A committee formed by Jeroen van Breugel, Katinka van Enkhuizen, Aafke Romeijn (writer and musician), Rosa Boon (director of TENT Circustheater Productions) and Wilma Franchimon (chairman of the Executive Board of Codarts) selected six entries for an online pitch and then chose the two award winners. Sinking Sideways “Circus collective Sinking Sideways distinguishes itself by working at the interface of circus, dance and mime,” the committee writes in its jury report. “The minimalist approach to acrobatic movement shows guts.” Sinking Sideways uses the prize for the further development of René, an experimental circus performance with two dancing acrobats. The show premiered on 11 and 12 September at Circusstad Festival in Rotterdam. Guus Bok “Singer Guus Bok convinces with an enthusiastic plan,” according to the committee. “With a line-up of various guest artists, he shows himself to be a connector of Rotterdam’s top talent.” Guus Bok will use his prize to realize De Euromast Live Sessions, the Rotterdam answer to the television programme De Beste Zangers. Eight episodes will appear on YouTube, Spotify, Facebook and Instagram. Codarts alumni Xenia Bannuscher (1995; Bayreuth, Germany) and Dries Vanwalle (1997; Ghent, Belgium) completed the circus training of Codarts in 2020, Raf Pringuet (1998; Mortsel, Belgium) did so this summer. Guus Bok (1987; Ridderkerk, the Netherlands) followed the music theater programme of Codarts; in 2012 he obtained his diploma. Stichting Ondernemersbelangen Rotterdam (SOR), founded in 1949, supports projects that can make a difference in and around Rotterdam. These include social and cultural initiatives of social importance that improve the business climate. Codarts Rotterdam offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in music, music theatre, dance, circus, music and dance education and music and dance therapy. The art college has more than 1,000 students, of approximately 65 nationalities, and approximately 420 employees.
Margriet won the Jazz Audience Award for the album Northern Lights with the Odelion Orchestra. The winners of Edison Jazz 2021 were announced on Saturday by Co de Kloet during CoLive! on NPO Radio 2.
Her research will focus on the role of the arts for (mental) health and aims to contribute to knowledge innovation in education and practice of the arts therapies. As an associate professor, Rosemarie Samaritter will also supervise PhD and postdoc candidates in the field of music and dance therapy, in collaboration with university partners and practice institutions. Rosemarie Samaritter – a certified senior dance movement therapist and supervisor with many years of clinical experience – already works at Codarts: she is a senior research fellow and the programme leader research at the Master of Arts Therapies.
