Mark brings with him a wealth of experience, gained over the past nine years as the head of the Classical, Conducting, and Composition & Music Production departments at the Prins Claus Conservatoire (PCC) – a part of Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. During his tenure at PCC, Mark led more than 80 teachers, emphasising strong collaboration among colleagues and coaching his team to maximise their potential. Mark is dedicated to providing students with the necessary skills to adapt to new opportunities that may arise in the future. He is determined to bring fresh energy and diverse perspectives to his role as the new head of Classical Music. The Rotterdam Conservatoire is pleased to welcome Mark as the new head. In the Lab , stressful performances, auditions or presentations can be practiced in a safe but realistic environment. Besides students, interested parties from outside Codarts, such as orchestra members or people who want to learn to speak better in public, can also use the Lab. The Lab was festively opened on Wednesday, November 1, by Lorenzo Viotti, chief conductor of the Dutch National Opera and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. The Performance Lab is an initiative of the Performing Arts Medicine professorship and Codarts' Student Life student support programme, aimed at structurally investigating and optimising the physical and mental health of performing artists, students, athletes and patients. Performing under pressure The stresses and challenges involved in delivering top performances are no stranger to chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti. He says: ' It is very important that during their studies there is already attention for the mental and physical health of performers. It is special that Codarts is making this as such a fundamental part of its education through research, the Student Life programme and now the realization of a Performance Lab. ' After the opening of the Performance Lab, Lorenzo Viotti gave an exclusive, interactive Masterclass in Rotterdam's Kunsthal to a group of 200 Codarts students and teachers in which he shared his own experiences with the theme of performing under pressure. Among other things, he talked about how important it is for him - sometimes against the expectations of others - to make time for himself, away from the music, in order to keep the fire burning for his profession. Codarts Student Life The Masterclass was organized in honor of Codarts Student Life's 10th anniversary. The Student Life programme adopts a ‘Team Around the Artist’ (TATA) approach, which means that the student is at the center of attention and is not only supported by the teachers but als by the Performing Arts Health Center (PAHC) team, which consists of health professionals with backgrounds in the performing arts or elite sports. Physical therapists, student psychologists, a speech therapist, a dietician, a performance coach and an ear protection specialist are all part of the PAHC. The PAHC works closely with teachers of Pilates, Yoga and Alexander Technique. In addition, students are supported by study coaches, a student counsellor and the International Office. Dance students at Codarts have 6 times fewer injuries than students in similar international programmes. At the start of the professorship, physical and mental health problems led the list of most frequently mentioned reasons for quitting a Codarts study programme. Since then, these reasons are no longer in the top 3. In 2022, the Student Life team won a Higher Education Premium from the minister of Education, Culture and Science worth €500,000 to further develop the programme. The Masterclass with Lorenzo Viotti is part of that.
After a warm welcome on Monday morning, the new students were informed about important issues during the Info Market. For the rest of the week, students worked with students from other courses on crossover projects. They were busy creating and rehearsing, after which Codarts staff and students enjoyed sparkling final presentations in our circus venue. Accompanied by Monica Akihary, winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2023, they will perform repertoire from their own culture and tradition around the theme "Freedom and Peace. But who are these young artists and what are they doing nowadays? Codarts spoke with singers Khorshid Dadbeh and Cici Isenia . Alumni Khorshid Dadbeh came to the Netherlands five years ago from Tehran, Iran, to study the instruments Tar, Tanbour and Setar at Codarts. After earning her bachelor's degree, she went on for her master's degree in Performing Music. Cici Isenia came to the Netherlands from Curacao to study at Codarts. Cici took the Music in Education programme: "a very broad education that makes me employable in many places." But what did the education ultimately bring them? For Khorshid, Codarts was a special place. It gave her the opportunity to learn new methods of creating and analyzing music. And above all, to study Modal, a genre that is especially well-known in countries like Iran, Turkey and Armenia. She adds: "on the other hand, meeting and playing with musicians from different countries and cultures, in the friendly environment of Codarts, has improved my understanding of artistic and professional skills and relationships." Cici says that at the programme she was exposed to different genres of music. "This has made me flexible and creative as a professional." "Music is a never ending journey that requires practice and study and I try to develop my music by traveling and playing in Iran and other countries."- Khorshid Dadbeh Workfield After they graduated, they entered the work field. Both Cici and Khorshid started teaching mainly singing and music. In addition to teaching, Khorshid forms the Jansouz Collective with her brother, plays concerts in duo Hamraaz and has an album on the way. Cici teaches at two elementary school and gives individual lessons at De Zangschool in Dordrecht. She also performs as an artist, writes songs and is a background singer for several Dutch artists. Development is paramount for both of them. "I find it important to keep developing myself, that's why I keep taking courses and workshops in the field of vocal technique and education, but also when it comes to entrepreneurship" said Cici. Khorshid sees music "as a journey without end, which requires practice and study and I try to develop my music by traveling and playing in Iran and other countries." Sacred Songs When asked what Sacred Songs means to alumni, Cici says she finds bringing different cultures and religions together so special. She adds, "I believe we experience more understanding and love for each other when we participate in each other's cultures. How incredibly cool is it that I get to contribute to this?" For Khorshid, the theme of freedom is especially meaningful. She emphasizes that she finds it important to be able to express her feelings through music for the people of Iran, because of the current situation in the country. Collaboration Codarts The Rotterdam edition of Sacred Songs is in collaboration with Codarts, among others. According to supervisor Jan Kuhr of the Codarts World Music Department, the collaboration represents an inclusive view of different global music genres on a local level. It is a way for Codarts to inspire, connect and support artists. It offers emerging artists a stepping stone to take the next steps from the conservatory to a professional career. This name was chosen because it better suits the image and ambitions of the secondary school. The addition 'lyceum' makes it immediately clear that it concerns havo and vwo. For years, the secondary school has worked closely with Codarts Rotterdam to ensure that young talent is given the opportunity to develop in the field of music and dance. With the name Codarts Lyceum, the school shows the outside world how proud they are of the collaboration and affiliation with our university of the arts. The name change is another step in strengthening the high school's brand. In the coming period, a campaign will start and work will be done to replace the old name. Changing the name involves many practical adjustments. Among others, the e-mail addresses, teaching materials, social media channels, website and diploma paper have to be changed. In the coming period, all changes will be implemented step by step. Apart from the name, nothing will change. Codarts Lyceum will continue to offer the artistic and regular courses in the quality that parents and students are used to. Codarts Lyceum will remain the same safe secondary school, where students with artistic ambitions can develop to their full potential.
The evening was presented by the charismatic Gavin-Viano. While he described Codarts as a "dope, highly urgent place", a large white ball featuring circus students Malte Gerhardt and Benedikt Löffler provided a striking preview of their later performance. Gavin-Viano encouraged the audience to connect and step outside their comfort zone, setting the tone for the evening. The first performance was by Music Therapy student Sietske Oosterhuis, who illustrated the transition from artist to music therapist with her work 'In Time'. Her performance highlighted the therapeutic value of music and improvisation to express emotions and create connection. Message of art and expression Next, Renate Eringa, the president of the Executive Board, took the stage. With Nina Simone's vision mentioned above in mind, she invited the audience to imagine what it would have been like if they had had a passion for circus, dance or music at another time. And what the world looked like back then. She also talked about the value of nudity as an integral part of artistic expression and its changing perception. Renate encouraged openness and exploring the depth of the arts in the present day. Students danced across the stage during her speech, bringing the message of art and expression to life. The dancers returned in the performance THEY, by Silke Kloostermann, a Bachelor of Dance in Education programme graduate. Her performance combined dance and spoken word and touched on profound themes such as diversity, acceptance and societal change. Energetic circus act The duo Benedikt and Malte, Hand2Globe, then returned to entertain the audience with an energetic circus act that focused on their friendship and the challenges that come with it. They brought humour and dynamism to their show, which was much appreciated by the audience. Maciej Kuźmiński, choreographer, teacher and producer, surprised the audience with his dance piece 'Requiem', performed by five dancers. The choreography enchanted the audience for nine minutes. Transdisciplinary approach to art education Next, it was director Arlon Luijten's turn. The preview of his documentary offered insight into the creation of RASL, the Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab, a partnership between Codarts, the Willem de Kooning Academy and Erasmus University Rotterdam. The film reflected the innovative nature of RASL and highlighted its transdisciplinary approach to arts education. Explosive finale The evening ended with a festive performance by the World Music Orchestra, consisting of 40 students from diverse musical backgrounds. Led by conductor Jasper Staps, they travelled through 55 different musical genres, resulting in an explosive finale. Afterwards, Gavin-Viano invited all attendees for drinks and dancing in the foyer. It was a fantastic opening of the academic year, promising for what is to come!
The EAIE conference is organized by the European Association for International Education (EAIE), a non-profit association with more than 3,000 members inside and outside Europe. Based in Amsterdam, this knowledge center aims to connect higher education professionals, share knowledge and promote international collaborations. The conference brings educational institutions from different countries together in a very efficient and effective way. The program offers workshops, presentations and networking events, among other things. Already since 2017, Codarts together with its partners Erasmus University Rotterdam, Hogeschool Inholland, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Thomas Moore, Rotterdam Partners and the municipality of Rotterdam have had the ambition to organize this annual conference in Rotterdam. That it has now succeeded offers great opportunities to raise our profile and show how education is shaped here. Last year the 32nd edition of the EAIE took place in Barcelona. The 6300 visitors from more than 90 countries showed that this event belongs in the largest cities in the world. No wonder they chose Rotterdam as their next destination! This year's theme is 'connecting currents'; freely translated into 'connect currents'. With this, the organization wants to celebrate the maritime history of Rotterdam. In 2009, he followed his passion for music and moved from Turkey to the Netherlands to study jazz vocals at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. This was a significant step for him because prior to his musical career, he worked in various management roles as an engineer for more than 7 years. Remarkable Achievements Over the past 14 years, Hancılar has achieved remarkable accomplishments, including releasing three albums with his own jazz quartet. He also received a nomination for the Edison Jazz Award and performed at renowned venues such as Paradiso and the North Sea Jazz Club. His entrepreneurial and resourceful personality led to the success of his own music school in Amsterdam West, which grew into a thriving musical community within 9 years. Additionally, he held a special position as department head for classes and courses at Bplus C (Library Plus Centre for Arts and Culture) in Leiden. Yaşam Hancılar, Head of Jazz: "I am looking forward to contributing to the development of the new generation of jazz musicians and interdisciplinary collaboration at Codarts. The Codarts Kick-Off week 2023, like previous editions, was all about getting to know the city, the school, and each other. Information was given about all kinds of important matters (housing, insurance, etc.) at the information market and there was an opportunity to take photos with fellow students in the photo booth.
