Artistic Research

Artistic research is a central element of the Codarts Master of Music programme. Through practice-based research you explore questions that arise from your own artistic practice as a musician, composer, or conductor.

Working closely with research coaches and fellow students, you develop a research project that deepens your artistic understanding and strengthens your professional practice. Throughout the programme you present your progress in feedback sessions and share the artistic outcomes of your research in performances, recordings, or compositions.

Students also participate in a range of research clinics focusing on specific topics such as methodology, documentation, and artistic experimentation.

Each year the programme culminates in Research on Stage, an event where selected second-year students present the artistic outcomes of their research through live performances and discussions.

Our research coaches are both experienced researchers and active performers. They guide students within several artistic research domains, while also working together as a team to support each student’s project.

 

Performance Practice

Coaches: Bárbara Varassi Pega, Federico Mosquera , Aleksandra Tonelli, Kevin Skelton, Andrew Wright

Research in this domain focuses on musical interpretation, performance style, and the artistic decisions involved in bringing music to life. Projects often explore specific repertoire, performance traditions, or new approaches to interpretation.

 

Composition | Arranging  | Screen scoring

Coach: Federico Mosquera

This domain focuses on the creative process in composition, arranging, and music for media. Research explores compositional strategies, creative workflows, and the interaction between musical ideas and technology.

 

Global Musics

Coaches: Michalis Cholevas, Stephen Meyer

Research in this domain engages with musical traditions from around the world, including modal traditions and intercultural musical practices. Students explore how these traditions can enrich their artistic vocabulary and inspire new creative directions.

 

Jazz Improvisation,

Coaches: Marc van Roon, Sanne Verbogt 

This domain focuses on expanding the artistic language of improvising musicians. Research often explores new approaches to improvisation, composition, and ensemble interaction.

 

Pop Music

Coaches: Marc van Roon, Sanne Verbogt

This domain focuses on research into creative practices within contemporary popular music. Students investigate topics related to songwriting, music production, vocal and instrumental performance, and recording practices. Research projects explore how artistic, technical, and collaborative processes shape musical identity and professional practice within the pop music industry.

 

Vocal leadership 

Coach: Job ter Haar

This domain explores Vocal Leadership, a method of choir leading that encourages singers to take an active role in the musical process. Research investigates how this approach can shape rehearsal methods, collaboration, and artistic outcomes.
