Klassiek harp studeren bij Codarts in de wereldstad Rotterdam betekent dat je deel wordt van een inspirerende community van creatieve professionals in de podiumkunsten.
Klassiek harp
You navigate this structure by entering into musical collaborations and by being inspired in workshops. You do not only study within our classical range, but also together with musicians from World Music and Jazz. You are emphatically encouraged to make crossovers with other disciplines at Codarts, for example with Dance. A Master’s in Music Therapy is also an option at Codarts.
Why study Harp at Codarts?
The Netherlands is known as a ‘harp land’. The instrument has a rich tradition here. Think of Rosa Spier, who travelled around with her harp like a troubadour, or her student Phia Beghout. The presence in their playing and their tone are characteristic. Just like these two, younger generations of harp players also have their own individual sound.
At Codarts this individuality in the creative process comes first, along with connections to other disciplines. In this respect we differ from other music academies, which generally are more focused on you excelling in virtuosity. With us, of course you learn the intricacies of playing the harp from highly qualified teachers (Gwyneth Wentink and Lenie de Meij) and we also look for inspiration in innovative approaches to playing the harp.
We train you to become a professional artist in an orchestra and explore how you can create a personal sound in your play. For example, we invite Andrea Voets to give a workshop during project weeks. She can teach you about storytelling through her highly praised musical journalism – the harp is very much a storytelling instrument. Harp player Remy van Kesteren gives a workshop on combining harp and electronics.
At Codarts you have the option of combining your musical talent with your need for academic knowledge. In the Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab RASL art and science meet in a double Bachelor’s that takes five years.
The Harp section has a fine collection of harps at your disposal. And, last but not least, the harp store Camac is just around the corner.
Programme
Here’s a rough sketch of the curriculum: every week there are main subject classes and orchestra play. In addition, there are interdisciplinary subjects and you take part in orchestra projects in which you play in ensembles. We also study chamber music and take theoretical classes such as analysis and solfège.

Je vindt daarin je weg door muzikale samenwerkingen aan te gaan en inspiratie op te doen tijdens workshops. Niet alleen studeer je binnen ons klassieke spectrum, maar ook met musici van Wereldmuziek en Jazz. Je bent nadrukkelijk uitgenodigd cross-overs aan te gaan met een van de andere disciplines van Codarts, bijvoorbeeld Dans. Ook behoort een Master Muziektherapie bij Codarts tot de mogelijkheden.
Waarom Harp studeren bij Codarts?
Nederland is een bijzonder harpland. We kennen een grote traditie. Denk aan Rosa Spier die als een soort troubadour met haar harp rondreisde, en aan haar student Phia Berghout. De presentie in hun spel en de toon zijn kenmerkend. De jonge generatie harpisten heeft in navolging van hen, een eigenzinnig geluid.
Bij Codarts staat die eigenzinnigheid in het makersproces voorop, en de verbindingen met andere disciplines. Daarin zijn wij anders dan andere conservatoria die over het algemeen hun focus meer hebben op het excelleren in je virtuositeit. Bij ons leer je uiteraard van hooggekwalificeerde docenten (Gwyneth Wentink en Lenie de Meij) de finesses van het harpspelen, en we zoeken graag inspiratie bij vernieuwende toepassingen van het harpspel.
We leiden je op tot professioneel artiest in een orkest en kijken naar hoe je een persoonlijk geluid in je spel kan brengen. Zo nodigen we bijvoorbeeld Andrea Voets uit voor een workshop tijdens projectweken. Zij leert je over storytelling met haar veelgeprezen ‘musical journalism’ – de harp is bij uitstek een verhalenverteller. Haar workshops zijn maatwerk, afgestemd op de studenten. Van harpspeler Remy van Kesteren leer je in een workshop over de combinatie met elektronica.
Bij Codarts bestaat de mogelijkheid om je muzikale talent te combineren met je behoefte aan academische kennis. In RASL, Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab komen kunst en wetenschap samen in een vijfjarige dubbele bachelor.
Wij als vakgroep hebben een mooie collectie harpen voor je ter beschikking. En niet te vergeten, de harpenwinkel Camac zit om de hoek.
Programma
Een grove schets van het curriculum: wekelijks heb je hoofdvakles en orkestspel. Daarnaast zijn er interdisciplinaire vakken en neem je deel aan orkestprojecten waarbij je meespeelt in ensembles. Je studeert kamermuziek en krijgt theoretische vakken zoals analyse en solfège.
