During the official opening yesterday of the academic year the chairman of the Friends of Codarts announced which excellent talents will receive a stipend from the foundation.
Let’s make music! That is the title of the new short video of our Classical Music department.
Photo rookvrijegerneratie.nl. As per 1 August 2020, all Codarts locations will be completely smoke-free. From that date on, the new Law on Tobacco and Smoking Products comes into effect. Smoking will then be banned from all our buildings and the areas around the buildings (including entrances and exits). This includes, for example, the balcony at the location Kruisplein and the square at WMDC. The smoking ban also applies to the use of e-cigarettes. All smoking facilities in and around our buildings have been or will be removed. Obviously, smoking is and remains an individual responsibility. However, as Codarts cares about the health of its students and employees we like to offer them a good and healthy learning and working environment. We therefore want to prevent non-smokers being inconvenienced by other people smoking and that young people see others smoke and may be encouraged to do likewise (‘smoking is contagious’). Many young people start smoking when they begin their studies. At educational institutes, therefore at Codarts too, teachers and employees must set an example. We hope and trust that everyone will cooperate. A smoke-free generationThe movement ‘Towards a Smoke-free Generation’, an initiative of the Hartstichting, KWF Kankerbestrijding and the Longfonds (the Heart Foundation, KWF Cancer Prevention and the Lung Fund), aims at making sure that children are protected against tobacco smoke and are not tempted to start smoking. The national government – together with more than 70 organisations, united in the National Prevention Agreement – has set a goal of having a smoke-free generation in 2040. This means that then no children at all start smoking. The agreement also strives towards bringing the number of smoking adults down from 23 percent to 5 percent at the most. How to quit smokingThere are various kinds of effective help available for those who wish to quit smoking, …
Francis Ng (master voice) and Agata Pośnik (master cello) received a Hartman Award 2020 from the Hartman Fund Foundation on Friday 10 July. The awards, each € 1,000 in size, were presented online by Marc Hartman, son of the founder and namesake of the foundation, Wim Hartman. The jury report: Francis Ng Listening to tenor Francis Ng everyone will be immediately overwhelmed by his versatile voice, refined legato and impressive musical personality. Francis reached a high level of excellence in every vocal and musical aspect. Being always prepared and motivated makes him a great joy for all the teachers to work with. As a singer and artist, after two years of master studies, he is now fully equipped to take the next steps as a young professional. In his artistic research trajectory Francis wanted to fully benefit from all the possibilities present at Codarts and to build a relevant network for his future as an artist. As a researcher Francis was actively developing new ways to perform the well known bel canto repertoire, which has a very long tradition. By doing this research Francis not only became the expert in the field of making free embellishments, but he also implemented his research results in his performances in a very creative and personal way. As an upcoming tenor in this way he adds something unique and personal to the tradition of bel canto singing. When being asked how he would describe his motivation to sing, Francis responded: “I find ultimate joy in singing because music connects humans and transcends individuality into community.” Francis graduated cum laude and is considered an exemplary candidate to receive the Hartman award 2020. Agata Pośnik Agata has a combination of distinctive characteristics which we do not see often combined within one person: an open and inquisitive attitude, highly …

Because of the Covid-19 Lock down, the “backing vocals” exam of Codarts Pop is slightly different this year. We've decided to invite guest singer Martin van der Starre, to record “With a little help from my friends” on a backing track made by students of Codarts. All singers had to record and film their backing-parts at home. The result is amazingly good!
