Arts and Wellbeing
The professorship Arts and Wellbeing at Codarts Rotterdam explores the intersection of performing arts, health and wellbeing.
Arts and Wellbeing

The professorship is organized around two primary research lines:
- Arts for Wellbeing: By investigating the impact of music, dance, circus, and arts therapies, this research line aims to improve health outcomes, reduce stress, and build resilience. The goal is to create a cohesive framework for integrating the arts into healthcare and influencing policy, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and humane healthcare system.
- Healthy Artist: Focusing on the physical and mental health of performing artists, this research line develops preventive strategies for managing health problems, such as injuries and mental problems, supporting artists in maintaining peak performance and a sustainable career. By addressing these challenges, it ensures that artists can continue to create and perform at their highest potential.
The professorship also enriches Codarts’ teaching programs at all academic levels, fostering collaboration with universities, dance companies, orchestras, circus organizations, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. Through these efforts, the professorship advances the role of the performing arts in promoting wellbeing and improving health outcomes.
