NEFES – Bektashi Hymns from Istanbul and the Balkans

Ten students from the Global Musics Department (specialisation: Maqam and Modal Traditions of the Silk Roads) present Nefes: poetic devotional songs from the Bektashi Sufi tradition.

Originating in Anatolia in the 13th century and later flourishing in Istanbul and the Balkans, this repertoire reflects centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Roads. Performed within the modal system of Ottoman makam music, these hymns bring together poetry, melody, and spiritual reflection. The programme offers audiences an encounter with a living musical tradition shaped by movement, exchange, and shared histories, presented with care for context and lineage.

The ensemble is guided by Kudsi Erguner, internationally renowned ney player, composer, and scholar, and UNESCO Artist for Peace, recognised for his lifelong contribution to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. His involvement situates this project within a lineage-based approach to transmission, foregrounding respectful engagement with spiritual repertoires in contemporary performance contexts.
