Roman Spitzer, an allround musician, enjoys an extensive career both as conductor and violist. A native of St. Petersburg, Roman has studied violin at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music with Prof. V. Mazel, in 1990 he continued his studies as a violist at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music in class the of G. Lewertoff and was soon invited to be the Principal Violist of the Tel Aviv Symphony Orchestra, playing at the same time in the New Tel Aviv String Quartet.
This quartet has won several prizes in different competitions and has also participated in the International Quartet Festival in Tel Aviv. Roman has also been a member of the Sapphire String Quartet.
As a chamber musician, Roman has performed with Natalia Gutman, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Sol Gabetta, Steven Isserlis, Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin, Julian Rachlin, Gil Shaham, Peter Wispelwey, Guy Braunstein, Stephen Kovacevic, Yefim Bronfman, Konstantin Lifshitz and leading IPO members in venues such as Verbier Festival, Menuhin Festival Gstaad and Solsberg Festival.
As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic and the Gewandhaus Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta, Ilan Volkov and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. Since 2000 Roman Spitzer has been the Principal Violist of the Israel PhilharmonicOrchestra, and since 2016 he is the Principal Violist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
