Ramon Lormans

Ramon Lormans is one of the most sought-after marimba players of the moment. With his passionate playing and communicative presence on stage, he can move his audience. Ramon regularly plays concerts in large halls both inside the Netherlands and abroad. He gave masterclasses and recitals in Antwerp (BE), Detmold (DE), Donaueschingen (DE), El Espinar (ES), Cologne (DE), Kraków (PL), Leuven (BE), Luxembourg (LUX), KALIMA (CH), Merida (MX), New York (USA), Paris (FR), Saint Petersburg (RUS), Tbilisi (GEO), Tokyo (JP), and at the Zeltsman Marimba Festival (USA).

Ramon founded Sax & Stix (2003) with Eva van Grinsven, is marimba player and co-founder with Temko, and is the musical director for Theatre Hotel Courage. Since 2007, he has taught marimba as a main subject at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and since September 2015, he also teaches marimba as a main subject with Codarts Rotterdam.
In 2005, he founded Percussion Friends, a school for percussion talents, with Vincent Houdijk.

“Aside from competitions that offered many opportunities, such as concerts at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and solo concerts with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland: Veni, Veni Emmanuel (James MacMillan), Barracuda Concerto (Jacob Ter Veldhuis), and Panic (Harrisson Birtwistle). I also played solo recitals all around the world, on the marimba and in the context of chamber music. Recently: a number of concerts during KALIMA in Lausanne with Keiko Abe.”

Why do you feel students should come to Codarts?
“The classical percussion section maintains high standards when it comes to skill and uniqueness. Throughout the programme, exchange and widening the horizon are central, combined with a broad base and innovation. Marimba is a big part of the curriculum. That is why this is the school to study at.”

What will you teach them?
“Historically, marimba is still in its infancy. This offers many opportunities, but yet it already brings with it a tradition. I want to give students the musical baggage and tools to get to know themselves, to develop, and to position themselves in the present-day arts sector. The level of playing is considered top-of-the-bill worldwide.”

How will you do this?
“I depart from a technical basis and from learning to listen to your own instrument. Performing repertoire from all styles is trained with singing, visualization, imagination, energy, and intuition. With brand new work, and with arrangements and transcriptions from baroque music.”
