Jane Harvey studied Indian classical music, main subject vocal, at Tritantri Music School and the School for Indian Music and Dance (ISTAR) in Amsterdam. She has worked at Codarts Rotterdam since 1993, as a researcher and editor, translator Dutch-English, coordinator of the Music World Wide module and teacher of Indian music subjects including raga analysis, Indian music history and Indian music theory.
Why do you believe students should come to Codarts?
"Codarts is attractive to students because it provides a higher education environment in which music, dance and circus arts students can concentrate on the practical development of their subject as well as receiving a grounding in the theoretical side."
What are you going to teach them?
"My role is to give a background in the cultural, historical and theoretical environment of Indian music and show how it links to the students’ music practice."
How are you going to teach them?
"In the Indian music history and theory lessons the music is examined through literature, films, recordings and a broad series of handouts from different sources; students learn to give presentations, write assignments and connect to their own music studies."
