Brandt Attema followed the bass and contrabass trombone Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes (classical) at Codarts. He is now bass and contrabass trombone player with The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. He is also a member, and partly artistically responsible for, the New Trombone Collective and the biannual trombone festival Slide Factory.
In 2008, Brandt founded Duo Attema-Haring with Astrid Haring, the first bass trombone and harp duo in the world. This duo, for which over fifteen compositions have been written, plays concerts from South-America to Asia and from Norway to Spain.
Brandt is a bass trombone teacher with Codarts and the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. As a freelance trombone player, he played with Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Asko|Schönberg, and Musikfabrik Köln. Why do you feel students should choose Codarts?
“Because of the combination of music (classical, jazz, pop, world), dance, and circus, Codarts offers her students an extraordinary learning environment. It also has close ties to the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, which is world class (and Concert Hall De Doelen is its neighbour). Rotterdam – still under immense development – is one of the most vibrant cities I know.”
What will you teach them?
“I look for a way to have my students play their instruments as efficient as possible, so they can fulfill their musical ambitions. To broaden their view, I want to introduce my students to a diversity of music styles and timbres.”
How will you do this?
“First of all, by creating a programme for every student during the individual lessons that allows them to develop as a musician and trombone player. I do so with much personal attention. We also organize weekly group lessens for all trombone players; we nurture a climate in which the student feels safe and in which the student is helped by his or her fellow students in search of discipline, concentration, handling stress, and so on.”
