Grants and loans
As a student, you can benefit from various forms of financial support. These include student finance through DUO, additional scholarship opportunities, and a range of (cultural) funds you may be eligible for.
Incoming students
1. Study Finance via DUO
At some point, most students in the Netherlands encounter Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO), the Dutch governmental organisation responsible for student finance and the student travel product.
For students enrolled in regular bachelor’s and master’s programmes, DUO can provide financial support. Depending on your situation, this may include a basic grant, a supplementary grant (based on your parents’ or guardians’ income), a student travel product (public transport card), a loan, and/or tuition fee credit.
Dutch students and most EU/EEA students can usually apply for DUO student finance if they meet certain (residency and study) requirements. Non-EU students are generally not eligible for DUO student finance. Eligibility depends on your specific residence permit and individual circumstances. We recommend checking the DUO website for detailed and up-to-date information about possible options and requirements.

2. Student Support Fund
The student support fund is an internal Codarts provision for students who experience study delays due to exceptional circumstances and face financial difficulties as a result. The fund can offer compensation or support when regular provisions, such as DUO student finance, are not sufficient.
The legal basis for this lies in the Dutch Higher Education and Research Act (WHW), Article 7.51. This article states that institutions must have a fund from which students can receive financial support in case of special circumstances. These may include illness, disability, exceptional family situations, or participation in student representation.
More information about the conditions, application procedure, and required documents is available via decaan@codarts.nl.
3. Additional Scholarships and Funds
Once admitted to Codarts, you’ll gain access, via MyCodarts Studyspace, to an overview of scholarships and funds relevant to our programs. This information can help you find external funding for your studies or projects, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
Please note: you are responsible for applying to a fund or scholarship yourself. Most funds have strict criteria, receive many applications, and require careful preparation, such as motivation letters, budgets, or recommendations. Often, funds only provide support if other provisions (like DUO or the student support fund) are insufficient.
Our student counsellors can advise and provide feedback, but you must complete the application yourself. Questions? Contact: decaan@codarts.nl.
4. NL Scholarship incoming
The NL Scholarship (previous Holland Scholarship) is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s in the Netherlands. The scholarship consists of a one-time contribution of € 5000,- for the first study year at Codarts.
5. Codarts Talent Grant
For the academic year 2026-2027 Codarts offers 3 Codarts Talent Grants of € 5000 per year for the entire nominal study period to 3 non EU students. Students can not apply for this scholarship themselves but have to be nominated for it by the head of their department after their audition. This nomination together with the results of the audition will be crucial for the selection committee.
