Maarten van Boven is due to take up his post as director of the Rotterdam Conservatoire of Music at the Codarts University for the Arts on 1 October 2023. Van Boven is no stranger to the world of art and music: he was the general manager and artistic director at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam since 2012. Prior to that, he was the deputy-director at Paradiso for nearly ten years.

Van Boven believes that the arts and culture are essential. ‘They enhance the capacity to innovate and they create cohesion. This applies to music in particular. That said, music not only needs to be produced and performed – it also needs to be heard. Training is an essential link in this. It teaches us to listen, to master the skills, to go on the adventure and, by doing so, experience how music can create an almost other-worldly beauty. Good training helps top talent find their own “voice” in a safe environment. It also contributes to artistic and professional development. It is an honour for me to given the opportunity contribute to the multicultural, innovative metropolis of Rotterdam.’

Renate Eringa (chair of the board of Codarts University for the Arts): ‘We are delighted that Maarten will be joining our management team. With this we ensure a solid foundation so that the Conservatoire will continue to perform at a high level in the coming years, both nationally and internationally."

Lodewijk Asscher (chair of the Supervisory Board): ‘Maarten is a committed director, driven by a love of music. We have always been inspired by the way he is able to connect the creators with the audiences of tomorrow. We are convinced that his qualities will come into their own at Codarts.’
