Do you choose to study classical singing at Codarts? Then we as a team are ready to use all our experience to train you to become the widely deployable professional required by the professional field.
Unique in the Netherlands
At Codarts we prepare you for a career in a music world that is constantly changing. You become an independent, enterprising singer who knows what makes him/her unique. You, as a student, are central and, through an extensive program of singing lessons, coaching, drama lessons, master classes, physical training, language lessons, concerts, projects, ensemble singing and annual opera productions, you will be able to discover where your strengths lie and what your artistic signature will be.
We do that by taking care of and work on:
- a solid vocal-technical basis
- introduction to diverse genres and styles
- 4 public vocal concerts per year
- weekly interpretation classes for all students given by all main subject teachers
- integration of physical theater training in the interpretation classes with movement experts
- masterclasses, including from Margreet Honig with whom we have entered into a long-term exclusive partnership
- weekly drama lessons
- 3 ensemble and/or choir projects every year
- an annual staged opera project
- an annual project week in collaboration with the Music Theater department
Preparatory course, bachelor and master
As a preparatory student you work with your main subject teacher every week and you participate in all joint activities of the singing department, including the vocal concerts. You also work with a Codarts teacher on the preparation for the theory entrance exam.
As a bachelor’s student you have weekly lessons from your own main subject teacher and you work with the other teachers during the weekly interpretation class. You also work weekly with a pianist/coach on your repertoire. The other vocal-specific subjects are Italian, French, German (year 1 and 2 and on request senior students), drama, piano-singing duo class and chamber choir. General subjects: piano (practical harmony), music theory and history. You will also participate in the drama productions of the department, the master classes and all presentations.
As a master’s student you have weekly lessons from your own main subject teacher and you also work with the other teachers during the weekly interpretation class. You also work weekly with a pianist / coach on your repertoire. You deepen your personal profile in an artistic research that is linked to the main subject and is always related to your further development as a singer. In the master phase you will also participate in the drama productions of the department, the master classes and all presentations.
