Peter Somuah wins the 25th edition of the Erasmus Jazz Prize

On Sunday the 18th of April Peter Somuah was declared the winner of the Erasmus Jazz Prize 2021. The prestigious award for up-and-coming jazz talents was organized for the 25th time by Codarts Rotterdam, the Friends of Codarts Foundation and Nedspice. The award proved to be a great stepping stone for a number of successful jazz musicians, including Jan van Duikeren, Bart Wirtz, Louk Boudesteijn, Rik Kraak and Stephanie Francke. The final was presented by chairman Joost Patočka and could be followed through a livestream from de Doelen.

Together with his band Peter performed his own music: a combination of groovy jazz and traditional Ghanaian music. The Ghanaian trumpet player managed to win over the professional jury (Susanne Abbuehl, Benjamin Herman and Yanick Hiwat) by showing the joy of playing during the performance. Beside that Peter showed natural leadership and proved to be a great communicator for both the band and the audience. Peter is only in his first year of the bachelor Jazz at Codarts, but he is a promise for the future and the jury has high expectations of things to come.

Main sponsor Nedspice provided €3.000 for the winner, which is meant to give young jazz talent a push in the direction of the international professional circuit.
