Talent On The Move ends in New York

Year in, year out, the Holland Dance Festival (HDF) provides the high-profile dance talents from Codarts Rotterdam – the hotspot for contemporary dance – with a national stage. For what is already the tenth time, the HDF proudly introduced the talented dancers graduating from Codarts to Dutch theatre audiences. These energetic and colourful top dancers from many different backgrounds demonstrated their passion and their dreams in theatres all across the Netherlands. They took theatregoers on a sparkling dance journey through a varied programme by both renowned and up-and-coming choreographers.

After 30 performances the Dutch jubilee tour of Talent on the Move will be concluded in theatre De Speeldoos in Vught, on 19 May. Only a few days later, on 23 and 24 May, the tour will come to a definitive end in New York.  On those two nights, Codarts, together with the Ailey School, will present a very varied full evening’s programme in the Ailey Citigroup Theater, featuring choreographies of Jiří Kylián, Ton Simons, Stephen Shropshire, Bradley Shelver, Elizabeth Roxas and Marcus Willis.

Codarts Rotterdam@The Ailey School
This exchange, in which altogether thirty dancers of both institutes take part, is aimed at renewing and strengthening the collaborative relationship between these two renowned vocational training institutes for modern dance. With the project ‘Codarts Rotterdam@The Ailey School’ both institutes are committing themselves to a long-term and interactive relationship that will benefit the young dancers in their study programmes. In addition to the performances, the one-week visit includes classes, workshops and discussions. It is a unique chance for the participating dancers and teachers to exchange knowledge on a highly advanced level.

‘It is of the utmost importance that the dancers of the Ailey School are given the chance
to work together with other dancers on an international level.
Codarts Rotterdam is a leading European Institute with an excellent track record.’
– Melanie Pearson, Director of the Ailey School

‘For the Codarts dancers and staff this project is important on multiple levels.
The Ailey School’s unique and visionary approach to dance complements Codarts vision
and helps us broaden our perspective.’
– Caroline Harder, Head of Bachelor Dance at Codarts Rotterdam

‘For a whole week we are given the opportunity to work together
with students of this internationally renowned school, exchange experiences
and – as the highlight – share the stage with them.
As the style of modern dance in the USA has a different tradition
from that in Europe I am expecting both a different movement vocabulary
and new rhythms, dynamics and qualities that will help me grow as a dancer.’
– Celine Wetzels (The Netherlands), third-year student Bachelor Dance

‘I am very much looking forward to this adventure and feel very privileged to be part of it.
I see this trip as a challenge for myself to stay focused. I want to learn from all my experiences,
not just from my own perspective, artistically and technically speaking,
but also from the perspective of fellow dancers and new teachers.’
– Dovydas Strimaitis (Lithuania), third-year student Bachelor Dance
