Codarts & Yannick: chief conductor of Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducts Codarts Symphony Orchestra

Codarts & Yannick

A very special concert: Yannick Nézet-Séguin, chief conductor of Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, conducts Codarts Symphony Orchestra in a programme which is bulging with energy! The soloist is the young, talented Russian violinist Eugene Ugorski. Eugene is a second-year student from the violin bachelor’s course and studies with Igor and Vesna Gruppman.
It seldom occurs that an orchestra which consists entirely of students is led by a chief conductor of one of the best professional orchestras in the world. Codarts Symphony Orchestra consists of 100 students from 20 different countries (including Japan, Portugal, New Zealand, Italy, Colombia and the Netherlands).

Programme
Shostakovich - (parts from) the Gadfly Suite
Prokofiev – Violin concerto no. 2
Stravinsky – Rite of Spring

Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto is a work full of lyrical and melodic opulence. Particularly the concluding part, full of stirring dance melodies, is like one big ode to the joy of life.
The last work of the evening is certainly stirring and dramatic as well:
Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.
The explosive power of the Russian spring is protrayed by a young maiden who dances herself to death in a single long sacrificial ritual. This ballet from 1913 had an enormous influence on composing in the 20th century.

Jonge Honden
Often the talents of musicians of the future can only be heard within the walls of their practice studios. De Doelen is bringing in a change and once again giving various classical ensembles from Rotterdam Conservatoire the space to show how good they are in the ‘Jonge Honden’ series. Codarts & Yannick is the fifth and thereby last concert in this series for 2009-2010.
